Purpose:
The Clinical Lab Scientist performs a variety of Clinical Laboratory tests and reports results in a timely and accurate manner. Performs instrument maintenance and repair; troubleshooting issues as required. Performs, documents, and monitors various QC/QA processes of the laboratory. Oversees daily lab operations; performing general supervisory functions, in accordance with CLIA regulations.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions (other duties as assigned):
- Responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the laboratory staff and operation, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness. Notifies manager of problems requiring managerial intervention.
- Effectively performs laboratory testing and reporting of results in an accurate, timely and efficient manner.
- Adheres to all laboratory quality assurance policies, documenting all quality control activities.
- Effectively performs equipment maintenance, including function checks, as scheduled with documentation according to laboratory policies.
- Resolves problems with testing and equipment in a timely and constructive manner. Follows the laboratory's policies / procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's policies defined acceptable levels of performance, assuring that all appropriate remedial
actions are taken and documented. Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly. Notifies appropriate personnel of testing delays. - Accurately determines acceptability of specimens by performing visual inspections or by recognizing abnormal / unusual results. Verifies specimen identification / labeling prior to result release. Documents unacceptable specimens according to laboratory policy.
Communicates specimen requirements and problems to appropriate personnel. - Mentors lab personnel as needed, using constructive teaching and counseling methods.
- Performs testing on proficiency testing samples, maintaining documentation in accordance with laboratory policy.
- Effectively communicates with nursing staff and physicians regarding patient testing issues, providing consultation on issues, as needed.
- Recognizes critical values and follows appropriate notification Procedure.
- Ensures proper inventory of reagent stock / supplies is maintained.
- Effectively orients and trains new personnel, as requested by
supervisor. - Evaluates new testing methodology and contributes to writing technical laboratory procedures as requested by supervisor.
- Operates all computer hardware and software programs competently and efficiently.
- Effectively performs other duties and projects as assigned by management and / or leadership.
Experience, Qualifications/Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field and completion of internship in Medical Technology
- State of California Clinical Laboratory Technologist license or temporary license
- One year hematology experience preferred
- Current CPR certification required
- Knowledge of computer/telephony support, preferably in a health care environment
- Strong customer service background, preferably in health care environment
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Competence with computer processing functions and other standard office equipment
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
- Ability to calmly and professionally resolve customer issues with diplomacy and tact
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong organizational skills
Working Conditions:
- This position functions primarily indoors in a medical / business environment. Employee may be subject to blood borne pathogens, radiation, bio waste and other medically-related factors, with exposure to moderate noise levels.
- Visual acuity to read and compute screen and paper documents; close and distance vision, peripheral vision depth perception, ability to adjust focus; hearing acuity to converse with staff and customers; ability to walk, stoop, bend, kneel, and lift and move 25 pounds on a regular basis; ability to sit for hours at a time Employee will be exposed to moderate noise levels, interruptions, and occasionally asked to work evening and weekends as needed.
