Charles R. Drew University is located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of south Los Angeles and was founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising. CDU was founded to address inadequate medical care in the region and to provide equitable medical education opportunities for under-represented students.
CDU is strongly invested in the local and regional community. The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to provide equitable healthcare resources in a variety of south Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Summary:

We are seeking a full-time Family Medicine clinician-educator with training and expertise in women’s health and obstetrics in an urban underserved clinical setting. Family Medicine Clinician Educators are physicians who engage in clinical care, scholarship and teaching to advance the mission of Charles R. Drew University. The primary work is as a clinical faculty member who teaches and advances scholarship with medical students, residents and other health profession trainees in their respective clinical setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide full spectrum reproductive and perinatal as well as mother-infant dyad care to patients we serve
  • Precept/supervise residents rotating in the reproductive and perinatal/OB clinic
  • Work with the lead FMOB faculty in overseeing and updating the Women’s health and Perinatal rotation and curriculum
  • Proficiency in performing and supervise common outpatient gynecologic procedures (pap smears, contraception procedures, endometrial biopsy, colposcopy)
  • Participate in Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) training for new first-year resident
  • Provides evidenced-based education for residents and medical students, to include but not limited to, clinical teaching, interactive didactics and case presentations.
  • Provides supervision and oversight of residents and medical students during Family Medicine clerkship and/or residency rotations, as a Family Medicine clinical faculty member.
  • Contributes to and implements aspects of the rotation curriculum.
  • Provides timely feedback to trainees and completes evaluations on time.
  • Attends and delivers didactic sessions for residents and medical students.
  • Participates in scholarly activity and research, including national presentations, lectures, and publications.
  • Participates in departmental and/or hospital committees as recommended by the Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program and/or Family Medicine Department Chair.

  • Other duties and unique responsibilities as assigned by the Family Medicine Residency Program Director and Family Medicine Department Chair.

Preferred skills/certification in obstetrics and perinatal care: (not required)

  • Fellowship training/advanced certification in obstetrics and/or women’s health
  • Proficiency in performing and supervising vaginal deliveries (operative skills including vacuum and performing cesarean deliveries is a plus)
  • proficiency in first trimester/limited 3rd trimester ultrasound
  • Proficiency in performing and supervising newborn circumcisions and frenotomies
  • Experience with breastfeeding counseling/lactation consultation
  • Active ALSO instructor certification

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Provides mentoring, teaching and precepting services to the faculty, residents and students in the Department of Family Medicine educational programs.
  • Creates curriculum, assists in evaluation, and serves as rotation liaison for assigned residency program rotations
  • Participates in formative and summative evaluation of residents, faculty, staff and program evaluations. For residents, this includes evaluation of the six ACGME clinical competencies and procedural skills.
  • Conducts resident through role modeling excellent clinical care and professionalism, guided learning application of procedural skills and effective communication.
  • Perform timely evaluations to residents, medical students, and other health professional trainees.
  • Meet with residents to review performance, provide effective feedback on clinical performance, and to discuss their evaluations.
  • Oversee orientation of new trainees to the Family Medicine/Primary Care Clinical Site and other health care resources.
  • Participates in the Resident Advising Program and meets with resident advisees on a regular basis (quarterly at minimum).

Research and Scholarship Responsibilities

  • Attends medical student or resident didactic conferences regularly and presents at least 4 lectures per year.
  • Engages in scholarly activity annually.
  • Engages in scholarship that is peer reviewed and disseminated.

Clinical Practice Responsibilities

  • Serves as a role model for clinical care delivery for trainees according to current standards of care
  • Maintains a clinical practice in the Family Medicine Practice that meets the clinical standards of the institution, including patient care management and quality goals.

Service Responsibilities

  • Participate in academic service including program design and implementation, accreditation, strategic planning, attending commencement, and search committees.
  • Participates in institutional service for the residency program, department, college and university, including committees and subcommittees relevant to GME, QI and patient care.
  • Participates in and represents residency program in relevant professional and community organizations.

Administration

  • Assists in the recruitment and selection of faculty and residents.
  • Participates in faculty meetings.
  • Participates and assists in faculty development (biannually at a minimum).

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves on various academic program committees and sub-committees pertaining to the Family Medicine Department and College of Medicine as assigned by chair.
  • Attend and represent the Family Medicine Department, College of Medicine or University at local and national meetings related to the Family Medicine Medical Education Program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

EDUCATION:

  • M.D. or D.O. from a nationally accredited university.
  • Completed an ACGME accredited Family Medicine residency program in good standing.
  • Board Eligible/Certified in Family Medicine.
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted California medical license.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Academic credentials appropriate for appointment to the COM faculty and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Active employment as a licensed clinical provider.

  • Evaluating the performance of medical students and residents.

Compensation:

  • $245,000 - $260,000 annually
