Job description

The Department of Nutrition and Food Services at VA San Diego Healthcare System is hiring one Dietitian (Internship Director). Dietetic Internship Directors oversee the daily operations of the program and ensure education, curriculum, policies, and procedures are compliant with the ACEND® requirements and are compatible with regulations and procedures for Associated Health Trainees set forth by the VA Office of Academic Affairs (OAA).
Qualifications: Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship:

  • Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency.
  • Dietitians must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
Education:
  • Earned a bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent. Foreign To be creditable, college and/or university degrees earned outside the U.S and its territories must be evaluated by ACEND® and meet ACEND®'s International Dietitian Education standards which are designed to provide graduates with the knowledge and competencies to sit for the CDR credentialing exam. ~AND~
  • Completed an ACEND® accredited experiential or supervised practice program and provide a verification statement from the Program Director that conveys eligibility to take the CDR registration exam as a prospective RDN. A list of ACEND® accredited programs are located on the ACEND® website or at ACEND Accredited Programs Directory.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) - Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
  • Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements.
Grade Determinations:
GS-12 Dietetic Internship Director
  • Experience. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. (b) Education. A master's degree or higher from an accredited university or college in the field of dietetics or closely related field.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
1. Ability to develop, maintain, and supervise a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies to assure compliance with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities.
2. Knowledge of the principles of program management and oversight required to develop program goals and objectives, administer, and monitor program, evaluate program outcomes/accomplishments, set and redefine priorities, and implement effective solutions in processes/systems as needed.
3. Ability to act as a consultant for staff.
4. *Knowledge of human resources administration, including such functions as the ability to interview and select qualified applicants, and monitor and evaluate performance.
5. *Ability to manage and establish program goals and objectives, plan and administer a program, coordinate practice experience at affiliated sites, evaluate program accomplishments, redefine priorities, solve problems, modify objectives, and review activities of preceptors and interns.
6. *Knowledge to design Dietetic Internship curriculum to meet accreditation requirements established by the accrediting agency (ACEND) and VHA Office of Academic Affiliations.
7. In-depth knowledge of current practice in food service systems management, nutrition therapy, community nutrition practice, and business/entrepreneurial dietetics with the ability to integrate learning experiences in didactic and practice components of the internship.
Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary, but requires some walking, standing, bending, the carrying of light items such as books and papers.

PREFERRED CHARACTERISTICS
1. Knowledge of program development, management and evaluation; education leadership and administration; marketing and outreach; personnel management; pedagogy and adult learning; curriculum development; clinical nutrition and clinical nutrition management; and food service management and administration.
a. Develops program goals and objectives and tracks and assesses them to ensure the program produces measurable results through evaluation of data and improved program outcomes.
b. Develops short and long-range operational goals for the Dietetic Internship.
c. Collaborates with VA and affiliate program preceptors and provides oversight of their rotations and evaluation of interns under their supervision. Ensures timely completion of preceptors' SurveyMonkey rotation evaluations.
d. In compliance with OAA and the VASDHS Associate Chief of Staff for Education/Designated Education Officer, coordinates and maintains Affiliation Agreements with affiliate rotation sites.
e. Monitors intern performance and learning outcomes throughout their program to assure successful program completion. In collaboration with program preceptors, develops and facilitates remedial education for interns, as needed.
f. Maintains ongoing compliance with ACEND accreditation standards, including record-retention required by ACEND and CDR; assures payment of annual accreditation fees; and has full responsibility for writing and managing the re-accreditation self-studies and ACEND site visits.
g. Conducts outreach and program recruitment, including but not limited to maintenance of the VA San Diego Dietetic Internship website and annual open house to ensure continuing enrollment of students into the Internship Program.
h. Coordinates all aspects of the intern application and selection process, including establishing an applicant selection committee, applicant interviews, and ranking for the match process.
i. Plans and coordinates intern rotations, including maintaining up-to-date master and weekly rotation schedules, intern orientation, and class schedules, and collaborates and coordinates with guest speakers/presenters.
j. Responsible for approving interns' annual and sick leave and certifying intern timecards in VATAS.
k. In compliance with ACEND standards and OAA policy, coordinates preceptor orientation and training and ensures ongoing preceptor competency.
l. Provides direction, orientation, coaching, in-service training, and ongoing educational programs related to the Dietetic Internship Program.
m. At program completion, issues the Dietetic Internship Verification Statement, submits all program completion documents to CDR, and maintains permanent intern and program records as required by ACEND and CDR.
