Clinical Data Engineer

The Position

The Computational Catalyst pillar in the Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) Computational Sciences (gCS) organization is seeking a talented and experienced Data Engineer to join us in an exciting opportunity to help build the foundation of our Clinical Data infrastructure, which will improve and accelerate accessibility, efficiency, governance, and quality for Clinical Data used across gRED.

The Computational Catalysts group within gCS is a diverse, curious and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science with ambition to advance our technical excellence. The focus of the team is on partnering with the informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision making. We aim to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that truly make every data point count.

As a Data Engineer in gCS, you will design, develop and deploy scalable clinical and translational data pipelines and cloud platform capabilities for data integration, analytics, and AI/ML efforts, while in close collaboration with data scientists and consumers of the data to support groundbreaking therapeutics from across gRED, gCS, and Roche.

Core requirements:

• Minimum of 5 years professional applicable experience required

• Demonstrated strengths in technical oversight and driving initiatives

• Formulates and implements tactics and strategies for Data Engineering initiatives

• Identify patterns and develop general purpose framework and addressing scalability requirements for data pipelines and database/data warehouse solutions

• A hands-on engineer who is willing to get involved in collaborative multidisciplinary projects and technical excellence efforts, spanning scientific and informatics groups, to help further our data culture and contribute to our informatics capabilities

• Actively seeks out new technologies or novel uses for existing technologies

• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS

• Experience with Cloud data warehouse solutions preferably Snowflake, Redshift

• Experience with container technology (Docker/ Kubernetes, etc)

• Experience with software development workflow including versioning and code collaboration with Git, and CICD tools is essential

• Proficiency in Python and/or R

• Experience working with agile methodologies and cross-functional teams (Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Developers, Test Engineers)

• Experience partnering with the other Data Engineers, data managers, and business users (e.g. bench scientists), within cross-functional project teams, to identify functional needs, solve complex problems, and create unique technical solutions

• Must be team-oriented with strong collaboration, prioritization, and adaptability skills required

• Excellent written/verbal communication skills.

• Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Sciences, Data Science, Bioinformatics, or related fields

Nice to have:

• Experience in healthcare or life sciences industries desired

• Experience with clinical and patient-level data and systems preferred

• Familiarity with Clinical Data standards (e.g. SDTM, AdAM and CDISC data models) preferred

• Experience in operationalization of AI/ML models, MLOps tools, frameworks and platforms for diverse Data Science projects

• Familiarity with validation and GxP workflows and validated software development

• Good understanding of R&D processes and scientific data life cycle is a plus

• Proactive, demonstrate initiative, and be a logical thinker, willing to learn new skills and dive into a new scientific domain area

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $132,400 - $245,800. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below. Benefits
