Long Beach Community College has devised a special testing program designed to streamline the testing process for three (3) entry-level clerical positions. Minimum Requirements: Graduation from high school or its equivalent and increasing years of experience, based on each classification, as listed in the minimum qualifications section below. Established eligibility lists will be used to fill vacancies and temporary assignments throughout the District.

Based on your qualifications and performance on examination segments you may be placed on multiple eligibility lists for the classifications listed below.

CLERICAL LEVELS YOU WILL BE APPLYING FOR:
  • Office Assistant
    • Salary: Range 18 $3,748.19 - $4,596.19
  • Senior Office Assistant
    • Salary: Range 22 $4,150.16 - $5,095.09
  • Administrative Assistant
    • Salary: Range 27 $4,716.52 - $5,802.25
  • Advanced salary placement: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. Advanced salary placement may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Duties

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a three (3) class Clerical Series. The entry level classification is Office Assistant which provides a wide variety of routine clerical support functions. The second level of Senior Office Assistant performs more difficult functions, requires greater familiarity with process and procedures, and the use of judgement and knowledge gained through experience. The senior level Administrative Assistant provides the more complex, diverse, and confidential administrative support for higher management level positions requiring thorough knowledge of processes and procedures for the assigned area.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THESE POSITION:
Education, Training and Experience:

Office Assistant
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and at least one (1) year of office administrative or secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Senior Office Assistant
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and two (2) years of increasingly responsible office administrative or secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Administrative Assistant
An Associate’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of increasingly responsible administrative support; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
May require a valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.
Meeting the minimum requirements of the position does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidate qualifications will be assessed to determine those who meet and exceed requirements, and are deemed most competitive amongst the applicant pool to proceed.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS:
To be considered a candidate for this position, all materials required should be received by the Long Beach City College Office of Human Resources by the closing date. Incomplete or late applications will be disqualified from further consideration. Qualified candidates will be notified in writing if they are moving forward in the selection process.

Application Process:

  • If the position requires a college degree, transcripts or copy of a diploma, the required document must be attached at the time of application. Unofficial transcripts are accepted during this phase. For experience and/or education, please make sure to attach a statement clearly outlining how your additional experience and/or education covers the minimum requirements and qualifies you to be considered for this position.
  • If you participate in and fail any examination segment, you must wait a period of 90 days (~3 months) to test again for the same classification.
Selection Process:
The following examination segments are pass/fail and may be utilized during the selection process:
  • screening of the applicant's training, background, and experience
  • in-person or online:
    • Multiple choice exam
    • May include additional written examination(s)
    • Qualifications appraisal oral examination
(the above will be scored on a job-related basis)

Test parts are determined by the size and competitiveness of the candidate pool.
Only the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the examination process. Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit as determined by these competitive examinations.
