Job SummarySun Tribe EPC (“ST EPC”) is the mid-Atlantic’s premier distributed generation solar design and build firm. The business is focused on designing and constructing ground-mounted Solar Photovoltaic (PV) facilities that connect to the distribution grid (<20MWac). The Civil Project Engineer is a position in the Project Engineering team within the Sun Tribe EPC.
As the Civil Project Engineer at Sun Tribe, you will perform activities related to the site design of Solar Photovoltaic projects including site planning, grading, stormwater modeling, erosion control design, vegetative management, permitting and writing of SWPPPs and stormwater reports. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to perform site feasibility and assessments throughout the preconstruction, construction, and close-out phases of projects.
The Civil Project Engineer reports directly to the Senior Civil Project Engineer and works closely with other Project Engineering team members, Project Management, Construction Management, Preconstruction, and Supply Chain. Externally, the role will work with various civil-related subconsultants.

Principal ResponsibilitiesORIGINATION/BID STAGE WORK
- Participates in prospective project vetting as requested. Assists in review of client provided preliminary documentation such as land surveys, geotechnical reports, and environmental reports. Flags civil site risks associated with documents
- Creates conceptual grading, stormwater, and erosion control plans (up to 30%) as necessary to support preconstruction bids
- Works closely with our design engineering group in an iterative site/layout design process which culminates with our EPC site layout
ENGINEERING DESIGN STAGE WORK
- Performs various measurements, takeoffs, and analyses of civil construction documents prepared by contracted, 3rd party engineering firms
- Conducts technical reviews of stormwater management and erosion control calculations for completeness, accuracy, and compliance
- Assists in compilation of civil construction plan comments from multiple internal and external stakeholders
- Assists in vetting of civil construction plans versus other engineering disciplines, site diligence documentation, EPC contract specifications, and permit requirements
- Works directly with contracted surveyor, geotechnical engineer, and other site related subconsultants to coordinate additional property diligence and reporting as requested
CONSTRUCTION STAGE WORK
- Assists in solving civil engineering related construction issues as deemed necessary
- Assists in review and processing of civil engineering submittals as deemed necessary
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs civil design tasks such as layouts, grading and drainage, erosion and sediment control, and stormwater management associated with solar projects
- Calculates drainage areas, curve number (CN) coefficients, and stormwater runoff. Verify accuracy of stormwater management computations
- Drafts and designs with AutoCAD Civil 3D (i.e. Mass grading, road corridors, volume earthwork comparisons, surface creation with feature lines and grading objects)
- Verifies civil design is in compliance with EPC contract and permit requirements.
- Creates and/ or verifies site feasibility studies
- Assists with other tasks as deemed necessary
- Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program, EIT is preferred
- 0 - 3+ years of Civil Engineering experience specifically related to site design, land development, and stormwater management
- Prior experience in ground-mounted solar is a plus
- Must have interest in solar land development and site design
- Experience in grading, storm water management, and erosion control is a must
- Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D is a must, specifically surface creation and manipulation tools
- Experience in Microsoft suite products, specifically Excel
- Any Virginia DEQ administrator, inspector, or plan reviewer certification for stormwater management or erosion and sediment control is a plus
- Specific experience in concrete foundation or structural foundation design a plus
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong Planning, organization, and prioritization skills

- Ability to work & thrive in a generally fast-paced office environment
- Occasional travel to project sites and to the office in Charlottesville, VA is required.
