General Requirements: -
- Provides expertise for the completion of capital and/or maintenance projects in the Civil Design discipline in order to ensure safe, economical, constructible and maintainable designs.
- Technical: Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of Civil/Structural Design, Roads, Railroads, Environmental, Site Work, Concrete Design, Foundations, Buildings, Drainage, etc.. Familiar with industry best practices related to design standards and safety regulations including the plant's EMETL practices, Life Safety Code, and OSHA standards.
- Computer Competency Skills: Has a high competence level MicroStation, 3D Modeling and an intermediate level of competence in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Organizational: Has the ability to create complex detailed design drawings and documentation used for construction bid packages and for inquiring/ordering Civil items. Ability to work with civil engineer for complete design packages.
- Personal: Must be able to work with and get along with others with diverse backgrounds.
- Must be able to exchange ideas and information one-on-one and in a group.
Primary Responsibilities
- The Senior Civil Designer is responsible for all Civil aspects on multi-discipline projects (with Lead and Guidance from Civil Engineer).
- Develops scope, assists with cost estimate, schedule, design strategy and determines resources needed on Civil projects.
- Applies engineering principles in discipline of competency.
- Prepares basic specifications detailing performance requirements, specific components, design requirements, applicable design codes, and vendor drawing requirements. Prepares MSTs for inquiring and ordering Civil related items.
- Able to prepare and deliver sketches for a specific segment of a project as required.
- Evaluates vendor bids and drawings to assure compliance with specifications.
- Completes Civil/Structural designs that are safe, reliable, economical, constructible, and maintainable in accordance with the plant's standards and work processes. Designs will include both new installations and modernization of existing facilities.
- Collaborates with other multi-discipline designers / drafters to accomplish Civil/Structural design of projects.
- Exchanges technical information with peers, other engineering disciplines, and suppliers.
- Evaluates the plant's design standards for correctness, applicability, and relevance to particular Civil/Structural installations.
- Submits Management of Change (MOC) documents to correct existing design standards or to create new ones.
- Provides engineering field support on construction projects when requested by the Owner's Representative or plant.
- Provides engineering field support on plant support items and emergency needs of plants.
- Reviews and checks inner discipline bid/construction packages prepared for issue.
- Attends and participates in project team meetings, including final team check.
Specific Knowledge and Skills: -
- Superior skills in Civil design and bid package development using Civil Computer Design Tools.
- Has the ability to plan and organize work effectively while working on several projects simultaneously.
- Have effective oral and written communication skills.
- Must be a self-starter with high initiative.
- Has the ability to independently perform Civil design functions in the following area: (can be taught)
- EMETL & Electronic Most Effective Technology Library
- Global Project Methodology
- Non-global installation development and design
- Has the ability to understand and use many different types of engineering documentation, including but not limited to:
- Piping isometrics
- Equipment installation instructions provided by suppliers.
- The individual must be physically able to do fieldwork in an operating chemical plant, which includes taking field measurements and climbing stairs and ladders.
- Work in a Petro-chemical environment where hard hat, respirator, eye protection and safety harness will be required for fieldwork.
