Job description

The City of Roanoke is seeking a City Traffic Engineer to plan, coordinate, and supervise the design construction and operation of the City's traffic/transportation system. The ideal candidate is passionate about multi-modal transportation and eager to collaborate with colleagues and the community to deliver innovative transportation projects that support the City's goals of Vision Zero, sustainability, and mode split. They are an excellent communicator, comfortable speaking in front of a variety of audiences, and is collaborative in approach to problem-solving and project management. The ideal candidate is an effective supervisor with experience managing competing demands and able to prioritize effectively to ensure that the team is meeting designated goals and objectives. They will be well-versed in the fundamentals of Traffic Engineering, including bikeway design and traffic signal operations, and eager to implement process improvements.
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with a major in civil engineering with emphasis in Traffic/Transportation Engineering or related field; five years related experience and/or training in a variety of professional engineering work; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Masters in Transportation Engineering/Planning and/or Civil Engineering desirable. Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia or ability to obtain within 6 months.

This is an exempt position.SUMMARY
Plans, coordinates, and supervises the design, construction and operation of the City's traffic/transportation systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Investigates, analyzes and responds to internal, citizen, community organization and business inquiries/complaints concerning any traffic related issue
Performs operational assessments/analyses to implement congestion improvement projects that reduce traffic congestion and delay within the City
Reviews and approves developer submitted site plans, rezoning and subdivisions plans, and other Traffic Engineering signal or striping plans
Prepares new traffic signal designs and timing plans and implement in accordance with approved funding of projects
Oversees the review of permits for assemblies, street closures and sidewalk closures
Prepares, compiles and analyzes accident data to mitigate various traffic safety problems included in the City's traffic safety program
Assists in developing functional designs for street/s and intersection improvement projects and implementation of these projects
Acts as a representative of the City to coordinate with VDOT, MPO and others during the planning, design and implementation of various transportation projects
Represents division at Planning Commission meetings and respond to any engineering concerns relative to rezoning and street closures
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises an assigned staff in the completion of projects. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with a major in civil engineering with emphasis in Traffic/Transportation Engineering or related field; five years related experience and/or training in a variety of professional engineering work; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters in Transportation Engineering/Planning and/or Civil Engineering desirable.Employment Type: Full-Time
