Position Overview

Kiewit is actively seeking a Chief Tunnel Engineer who is a recognized industry leader in Tunnel Engineering, with expertise in the design and construction of tunnels and underground openings to support Kiewit Corporation's business across North America. The Chief Tunnel Engineer will work with an interdisciplinary team that includes civil, structural, geotechnical, drainage, environmental, mechanical, ventilation, fire & life safety, systems, and electrical engineers, as well as estimators, schedulers and other construction professionals, to identify engineering risks and develop appropriate designs for transportation, water, mining, industrial, power, and oil, gas & chemical projects.

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering's Design-Build team is driving clients to turn to Kiewit during all stages of design-build projects.  Through our integrated design and construction approach, our multi-disciplinary team works together to improve schedule, control costs and minimize risk.  Our construction-focused engineers work collaboratively with our estimators and builders to design solutions that are innovative, constructible, and designed with a focus on safety.   Clients benefit from the proven processes and tools used by Kiewit to minimize project risk. Location

This position will be based out of our New York, NY location. 

Responsibilities
  • Collaborating with owners and internal partners to track industry trends and potential projects across a range of markets and geographic areas; educating owners regarding suitability of projects for alternative delivery methods. 
  • Providing senior review and support on preliminary engineering designs and EPC/design-build pursuits and projects, focusing on early identification of technical challenges and risks; challenging estimating teams to balance a thorough understanding of site conditions, designs, and innovative solutions with an appropriate risk profile.
  • Working with owners and interdisciplinary pursuit teams to develop innovative and cost-effective bid phase designs, identifying key design risks, and developing plans to mitigate those risks; collaborating to develop accurate construction cost estimates.
  • Leading the exploration of alternate designs or new technologies to challenge the status quo and provoke exploration of new or innovative design solutions. 
  • Providing support and guidance to teams facing technical challenges and help them to develop practical, reliable, cost-effective solutions; supporting potential disputes and claims, including independent assessment of potential claim validity.
  • Providing industry thought leadership, actively engaging in professional associations, and encouraging active participation by others in associations, including serving as an association officer, member of technical committees, presenting technical papers, etc. 
  • Interfacing with Clients, Construction Personnel, Subconsultants, and Regulatory Agencies.  
  • Collaborating with Department Management to identify, develop, and align high performance teams and individuals to meet organizational goals
  • Fostering an environment that emphasizes collaboration and coordination; providing feedback and encouraging learning to create growth opportunities; mentoring team members.
  • Leveraging business acumen and understanding of tunneling and underground construction opportunities to assess and supplement skills gaps.
  • Leading by example with respect to safety, quality, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
     
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or closely related field, required. 
  • Minimum 30 years of progressive tunneling experience with a wide variety of tunneling methods (cut & cover, NATM/sequential, TBM, etc.) in rock, soft ground, and mixed face conditions.
  • Professional Engineer or Chartered Engineer registration, required.
  • Experience in EPC/design-build project delivery and multi-disciplinary team management. A proven track record of leadership and successful management of engineering teams is a requirement.
  • Demonstrated broad technical knowledge of engineering and technical solutions to issues associated with the rehabilitation of existing and design and construction of new tunnels, shafts, underground caverns, and other related projects, including ability to develop and evaluate innovative and cost-effective design solutions to problems and challenges.
  • Tunneling and underground construction-focused experience including: tunnel design, shaft design, ground improvement, temporary and permanent ground support, numerical modeling, instrumentation & monitoring, and property protection, in wide-ranging subsurface conditions, including subaqueous and high seismicity conditions.
  • Risk analysis experience for underground construction as well as experience with the development of Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBR) and other risk sharing contract documents.
  • Demonstrated tunneling and underground construction industry leadership, including holding officer or committee member positions with ASCE, SME, etc.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on interdisciplinary coordination and working in team environments. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills resulting in exceptional rapport with people.  Proven success working in a multi-disciplinary environment and directing the work of other technical staff.
  • This position requires travel to project offices and work sites. Ability to travel based on business needs and requirements, including the physical ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environmental conditions.

Base Compensation: $260,000 - $330,000

(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
