Markel is seeking a dynamic executive to lead its Global Strategy team for its insurance business. The Global Strategy team serves as the internal consulting function for the executive leadership team and supports the development, articulation, and execution of Markel's strategy. The Chief Strategy Officer will report to Simon Wilson, President, Markel International.
In collaboration with the leaders of Markel's insurance operations this person will play a critical role in advancing fresh and disruptive thinking, facilitating focused decision making and prioritization that ensures the company invests in the capabilities needed to stay ahead of the competition and maintain market
leadership.
Specific responsibilities include:

  • In partnership with the President, Insurance and Executive Leadership Team the Chief Strategy Officer will develop the design, framing, articulation, and execution of Markel's strategy for its insurance business.
  • Engage with the Executive Leadership Team to identify, develop and deliver transformational growth plans.
  • Responsible for setting Executive Leadership Team and Presidents Steering Group agendas and managing these meetings.
  • Operate as a conduit between Markel's insurance businesses, facilitating cross-platform initiatives to drive additional value and advance the power of the Markel platform.
  • Ensure clear linkage between long-term strategy and the delivery of shorter-term initiatives and business priorities.

Position Specification
  • Lead competitive positioning analysis across Markel's existing business units as well as assessment of potential new market opportunities.
  • Monitor, measure and analyze current and future industry trends and their impact on Markel's strategic plan, proactively identifying the potential need for change.
  • Identify strategic opportunities for experimentation of potential partnerships beyond, yet complementary to, Markel's current insurance landscape.
  • Continually monitor and explore potential M&A opportunities; build strong relationships with key banking partners, play critical role in due diligence, deal execution and integration of any M&A activities into Markel.
  • Leverages a business partnering model to recruit, manage and develop a high performing team of employees that are co-located with business leaders in our International and North American operations.
  • Collaborate with the global communication team to communicate Markel's strategy, increase awareness in relevant markets and enhance business development and partnerships.

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national base salary range for the Chief Strategy Officer position is $275k - $360k/year.
