For more than 50 years, Insight Housing (formerly BFHP) has provided a comprehensive range of housing, food, and support services to help those in need move from homelessness into a safe and affordable home of their own. We serve in seven counties in the Bay Area - Alameda, San Francisco, Contra Costa, Solano, Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Amador County. Position Summary

The Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) is a key partner to the CEO and an ambassador for Insight Housing, with primary responsibility to grow the organization’s fundraising revenue year over year to support its strategic direction. They will drive agency’s effort to achieve fundraising goals by cultivating highly effective strategies to secure and retain donors and overseeing fundraising programs including major donor and gifts program, foundation and corporate giving, special events, and capital campaigns. The CPO works closely with the CEO and the Board of Directors in all fundraising efforts and will be accountable to meet our ambitious short-term and long-term growth targets. The CPO is a member of the C-Suite and will ensure the success of the organization by instilling a culture of philanthropy, achieving fundraising goals, and contributing to strategic planning.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy and Fundraising:

  • Construct a comprehensive strategy and execute plans to establish the infrastructure and processes for a sustainable and comprehensive fundraising program, including annual fund, membership, individual major gifts, foundation, corporate giving, planned and endowment giving, and capital and unique campaigns.
  • Secure increasing funding levels to meet current and future capital, programmatic, and operational needs.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors at the highest levels of giving capacity, including individual and institutional sources, moving them through the stages of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Oversee the ongoing discovery of new major and principal gifts prospects, identification of lower-level donors to the agency who may have greater capacity, and both traditional and non-traditional sources of potential support whose interests may align with organizational priorities.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership, to identify and refine giving priorities and to translate those priorities into compelling opportunities for philanthropy and persuasive proposals.
  • Working with the marketing and communications team, and lead the fundraising team to develop content, themes and campaigns that align marketing and communications to revenue targets and advocacy goals and develop new channels and campaigns to attract donors.
  • Develop and implement an overall strategic plan for donor events to support cultivation and enhance Insight Housing’s profile.
  • Partner with the CEO on relationship building and fundraising opportunities that are strategic and of the highest priority and ensures that the CEO’s time is scheduled effectively in fundraising and donor cultivation processes and events.
  • Regularly evaluate Insight Housing’s fundraising programs to ensure that they are effective and efficient.
  • Represent the agency at fundraising events and meet with major donors and high-level prospects to raise awareness of the organization’s work and solicit support.
  • Oversee grant seeking including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements.
  • Oversee donor database and tracking systems and the stewardship, gift accounting, and reporting functions, ensuring all donors receive timely acknowledgement of their gifts.
  • Monitor and prepare regular reports regarding fundraising activities and progress for the CEO, Board of Directors, C-Suite, Leadership Team, and, as appropriate, for broader distribution.

Management:

  • In collaboration with the CEO and HR, hire, onboard, train, supervise, evaluate, and terminate as necessary all Fundraising staff.
  • Optimize processes, systems, and infrastructure. Oversee growth, maintenance, and enhancement of staff members technological proficiency and tools.
  • Set appropriate annual goals and monitor progress regularly to maximize staff performance.
  • Provide mentoring and strategic support to Fundraising team members for planning, coordination, and execution of initiatives tailored to achieve major gift prospects awareness, involvement, and commitment.
  • Ensure sound fiscal management and efficient allocation of resources, as well as compliance with all federal and state laws, regulations, and accounting standards related to charitable giving.

Board Management:

  • Actively partner with the CEO and Chief of Staff on board management, including identification and recruitment of new members, and education of board members about their role in advancing a culture of philanthropy for Insight Housing.
  • Cultivation and solicitation of board members’ financial support, leveraging their respective networks to expand the donor base and development of action plans that maximize the skills and abilities of board members to further the institution's goals.

Communications and Marketing:

  • Strategically collaborate with the Chief of Staff to devise marketing and communications initiatives to support Insight Housing’s philanthropic goals and optimize diverse platforms for donor engagement.
  • In partnership with the Chief of Staff/Communications team, develop cause-related marketing campaigns that raise awareness and funds for the organization's work.

Administrative:

  • Drive own vehicle to the field and to other program sites, as required; documenting and reporting mileage according to agency procedures, so that services can be provided in a timely manner; comply with agency driving policy at all times.
  • Participate in promoting a safe, healthy, and clean working environment consistent with agency’s health and safety practices.
  • Attend and participate in all meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Complete and submit own timesheets and approve staff timesheet in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Work within the framework of Insight Housing’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform other tasks and projects as assigned.

 

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Communications, or related field required. Masters strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years’ of progressive experience in fundraising and business development. Ability to demonstrate you are a strategic, dynamic development professional with a track record of successful asks from individual donors.
  • 5+ Years of Leadership and supervisory experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization. 
  • Transferable skills, demonstrated leadership and administrative skills, and other relevant experience will be considered.
  • Track record of developing and executing successful multi-year Fund Development plans, including all levels of individual giving, foundations and corporate relations, events, legacy gifts, as well as related marketing and communications strategies to support this work.
  • Commitment to serving individuals experiencing homelessness and ending the crisis of homelessness in Counties served. Experience with CARF accredited programs a plus.
  • Strong community networking skills and ability to build resources and relationships.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email, internet, and calendaring applications. Experience with Salesforce and Canva preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and interact in a supportive and professional manner with colleagues and clients with diverse range of abilities and cultural, racial, gender, and economic background.
  • High level of independent thinking and judgment.
  • Strong management skills required.
  • Strong attention to detail is a must.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and persuasive skills with a can do and flexible attitude.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, multitask, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain professional conduct, attitude, and appearance at all times.

 

Special Requirements

  • This position requires frequent driving.  A valid California driver license, reliable personal vehicle, current personal auto insurance as required by law, and an MVR sufficient to obtain and reasonably maintain insurability under agency auto liability policies.
  • Must be able to receive and maintain criminal and credit records clearance.

  • Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, talk, hear, and see clearly.
  • May be occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • May be required to lift or move up to 10 lbs.

Compensation Range: $190,000- $220,000 DOE
