JOB TITLE: Chief Nursing Officer
The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Provides executive nursing leadership in the provision of patient care at the hospital. Consults with staff, physicians, and other nursing units on nursing problems and interpretation of hospital policies and procedures to ensure that patient needs are met. Responsible for staffing, orientation, clinical education, competency evaluation, policies and procedures related to nursing. Assists in formulating the operating and capital budgets and ensures efficient and cost-effective use of human and material resources in delivering quality services.

Key tasks and responsibilities
Essential functions:
  1. Ensures the Hospital is in compliance with state and federal regulations in order to pass any state or federal inspection or licensure.
  2. Supervises Quality Assurance and Utilization Review programs.
  3. Responds and handles all patient complaints.
  4. Responds to data/information, gives rationale for actions taken, sets/revises priorities, participates in Performance Improvement, trouble-shoots equipment, while providing a safe environment to self and others.
  5. Fosters growth and development of management and leadership skills in nursing managers and staff members.
  6. Maintains effective communication and coordination of activities between other departments and staff members.
  7. Prepares and monitors and adheres to annual hospital and operational budgets.
  8. Accurately identifies and expeditiously resolves issues affecting the delivery of services.
  9. Develops standards of care and performance and implements a mechanism for the ongoing evaluation and improvement of performance standards.
  10. Actively promotes a positive image of hospital and services with the public and professional community.
  11. Communicates clearly, openly, and honestly in verbal and written formats.
  12. Maintains expertise with computer-based programs, and utilizes reports to improve services and ensures full utilization of system by staff.
  13. Assesses own performance using insight and constructive feedback to set goals to enrich knowledge and skills required to perform role.
  14. Maintains a positive work environment for staff and physicians and promotes team efforts.
  15. Ensures adequate staffing in order to achieve department's function and purpose. Completes and maintains departmental staffing plans and reports negative variance to the CEO and COO.
  16. Adheres to established departmental operation and salary budgets, and provides explanations of budget variances.
  17. Ensures that performance evaluations are current and are reviewed by employees during annual performance improvement interviews.
  18. Completes initial departmental orientation and competency review for newly hired direct reports.
  19. Ensures that all licensure/credentials certificates for applicable personnel are valid and up to date.
  20. Actively coaches staff and maintains open communication with them. Shares information as appropriate.

Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree, licensed as an RN in the state of Kansas, BCLS and ACLS trained (if not currently ACLS, will obtain training within 90 days of hire).
Preferred qualifications: Master's degree or progressing toward Master's degree, 5-7 years of nursing management experience.
