JOB SUMMARY:

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a key executive at think, responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, and oversight of all medical-related activities. The specific duties and responsibilities of a CMO may vary depending on the size and type of healthcare organization, but generally include the following:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide clinical leadership and guidance to medical staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care, and provider behaviors. Recruiting and mentoring of physicians, along with any disciplinary actions.
  • Collaborate with other Chief Executive Officer/Chief Operating Officer and departments to develop and implement clinical policies and procedures.
  • Liaison with the executive leadership and the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategies across the organization, including policies and procedures.
  • Participate and align medical services with the organization's mission, vision, and strategic planning and goals.
  • Active role in the governance framework, with a focus on improvement of data quality initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and safety that align with ACO.
  • Monitor and analyze clinical performance data to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes.
  • Foster positive relationships with medical staff, including physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to address concerns, promote collaboration, and ensure effective communication.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant healthcare regulations, laws, and accreditation standards.
  • Stay informed of changes in healthcare policies and regulations and adjust organizational practices accordingly.
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies related to clinical activities.
  • Address and mitigate potential risks associated with patient care and medical services.
  • Manage and allocate resources efficiently, including budgetary oversight for medical services.
  • Optimize provider staffing levels, ensuring appropriate coverage and efficient use of personnel.
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of medical education and training programs for medical staff. Encourage continuous professional development among medical staff.
  • Stay up to date of emerging healthcare technologies and ensure their effective integration into medical practices to improve patient care and operational efficiency.
  • MEC non-voting member, unless voted to represent med staff on MEC.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, and social behavioral sciences and application of this knowledge to patient care.
  • Knowledge of Practice-Based Learning and Improvement that involves investigation and evaluation of their own patient care, appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence and improvements in patient care.
  • Skill in using a computer and a variety of software, including Electronics Health Records (EHR) software, Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
  • Skill in communicating in a professional manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to convey professional demeanor when engaging with patients, protecting privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to enter data into a computer to maintain records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to act as a good representative of the company.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Successful completion of Family or Internal Medicine Residency training, board certification, Nebraska License to practice, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) License, and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Five (5) years of experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR) required. Five (5) years of practicing experience in an ambulatory group setting.
