CSTA is a non-profit membership organization that supports and promotes the teaching of computer science, providing opportunities for K–12 teachers and their students to better understand computer science and to more successfully prepare themselves to teach and learn. We are fully remote with engaged teammates spread from California to Massachusetts and we blend our collective experience gained from our past roles in non-profits, K-12 schools, higher education, and hospitality to create high-quality teaching and learning experiences for teachers worldwide.
Who We Are Looking For: A Dynamic and Strategic Business Partner
Our future CFOO is a dynamic and strategic business partner who will provide executive leadership and partnership to the Executive Director, the Leadership Team, and Board of Directors of CSTA, to pursue strategic priorities that are currently being developed through a comprehensive strategic planning process designed to guide the organization for the next three to five years. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is looking to leverage their deep expertise in nonprofit finance and management, and their skills in strategic hands-on problem solving and systems building.
As a strong collaborator with a “servant leader” mindset, you will bring deep knowledge and experience to the team. You have a keen sense of observation, candid and empathic communication style, and passion for improving and streamlining the work of an organization. You are someone who is equally comfortable leading the company through annual planning processes as you are in troubleshooting a broken financial technology integration.
As our ideal candidate, you are a hands-on and people-forward leader. You will build up, lead and develop our 4-person Finance and Administration team, supporting the following areas: accounting and finance, business planning and budgeting, contracting, people operations, and general administration.
How You’ll Contribute: Essential Duties and Responsibilities
In this role, you will operate as both an executive leader and individual contributor, leading the following bodies of work:
Financial Planning and Oversight
- Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Executive Director; administer and review financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status
- Manage organizational cash flow and long-term forecasting
- Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate periodic financial statements; and oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the Audit/Finance Committee of the Board of Directors; assess and implement any changes necessary
Administration and Organizational Development
- Oversee general administrative functions to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization scales
- Analyze, develop, and implement consistent and efficient operational systems and policies
- Develop an operational structure that will support the next phase of CSTA’s growth
- Provide or procure leadership development training for managers
- Ensure the organization meets all legal, licensing, insurance, and tax requirements
People Operations
- Oversee People Operations functions and policies including recruitment and onboarding, compensation and benefits, and performance evaluation
- Develop and lead internal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) activities in partnership with the Leadership Team and external partners
- Create growth and development pathways for staff
- Ensure that all people operations policies are current and applied consistently
- Work closely and transparently with all external partners including third-party vendors and consultants
**What You Bring to the Table: Experience & Qualifications **
As our ideal candidate, you are a highly proactive leader who thrives working with a lean staff in a highly collaborative culture. You have a proven strength in elevating your organization through operational best practices, and have strong acumen for creating focus and structure for evolving systems and teams.
To be successful in this role, you also bring some combination of the following:
- Seasoned financial strategist with experience successfully managing organizational budgets between $5MM-$15MM
- Finance professional with a minimum of 10+ years experience in increasingly responsible roles supporting company finance and operations, with at least 3 years experience in a senior leadership role
- Strong financial literacy and data analysis skills and experience in developing budgets and project plans, and managing financial audit and tax return processes (with external firm)
- Knowledge of government grants administration as well as fundraising and partnership development a plus; non-profit finance experience strongly preferred
- Proficiency in working with modern financial technology tools and systems
- Experience in leading and/or supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives
- Effective communicator with exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively build relationships and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Experience liaising with an engaged Board of Directors
- Passion for addressing issues of equity in CS education
- Current or prior CPA certification preferred

- Must be a U.S. Citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.
- Must pass a pre-employment background check
- Must be able to travel up to 10% time within the U.S. and occasionally work outside normal business hours. Travel costs are covered by CSTA.

What We Offer
As a nonprofit, we strive to be market competitive with similarly sized organizations, and internally fair in our pay practices. The hiring salary range for this role is $175,000 - $195,000 annually. This represents the target offer range given the scope and experience expectations for this role.
In hiring, we are generally open to candidates in a varying range of experiences and levels, and recognize that as a candidate you may be less experienced or more senior than this job description as posted. If that's the case, an updated salary range will be shared with you if you move forward in our hiring process.

What to Expect From Us
During the interview stage, you can expect:
- Step 1: An initial “phone” screen (45 minutes). If there’s a good mutual fit for the role, you’ll be invited to next steps in our process.
- Step 2: We’ll schedule a virtual interview loop with the 4-6 team members you will work most closely with (4.5 hours total).
- Step 3: Following these interviews, we’ll ask you to consider a scenario to see how you might respond to a typical situation encountered in this role. You can expect to spend 60-90 minutes reflecting & writing your thoughts and approach. We’ll schedule a 30-minute follow-up for you to share your approach, and answer any outstanding questions you have about the role.
