Job Purpose

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) for Communities In Schools of Nevada (CISN) serves as a member of the senior leadership team.

The CDO will develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, maintaining and expanding first line assessment for the organization’s funds development with a priority on individuals, corporations, foundations, and events. Position will raise funds for ongoing programmatic support, as well as the growth of Communities In Schools of Nevada (CISN) programs as outlined in the strategic plan. The CDO will oversee the cultivation of new relationships, as well as the stewardship of existing donors. The position provides supervision to the Marketing and Development Teams.

The CDO should be an innovative and collaborative leader who will actively represent Communities In Schools of Nevada (CISN) in the community on behalf of our students. The CDO must share a passion for our mission to radically improve the ways kids live, learn, and achieve success in school and in their communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain fundraising schedule/calendar, ensuring timely creation of marketing collateral and public relations communications.
  • Lead Fundraising team including supporting the administration of more than $3 million in contributions annually and review on an annual basis in comparison to budget.
  • With CEO approved strategy, provide leadership to CISN Board fundraising committee focused on development, ensuring a multi-tiered giving model.
  • In collaboration with CFO and CEO, develop annual statewide revenue plan, with focus on corporations, foundations, individuals, and fundraising events. Work with affiliate leadership to develop and communicate regional responsibilities and develop new opportunities.
  • Lead Resource development team responsible for Contributions Portfolio of $2 million and $1.1 million minimum in special events across the state to be reviewed on an annual basis.
  • Oversee the management of resource development staff in the identification, writing, management, and reporting of donor contributions for both State and Affiliates.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of at least 15 major donors/prospects (major donor is identified as $250K or higher).
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program that deepens relationships with donors.
  • Oversee the operational and reporting requirements of the department statewide, including donor database management, donor acknowledgement management, budget management and margin analysis for events.
  • Develop communication and public relations plan that ensures consistency of messaging, maximizing impact, along with marketing and media activities.
  • Monitor development progress, reporting frequently to the CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Develop and execute all proposals, in conjunction with the Development Team and indirectly, the Grants Team.
  • Oversee the annual development of a marketing plan, specifically aimed at cultivating new donors in each of the targeted areas.
  • Provide research and feedback to CEO regarding national, regional, and local philanthropic activity, recommending best course of action to maneuver and engage donors.
  • Review all award/decline letters and correspondence to ensure compliance with giving parameters, as well as identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Represent CISN during major community events, formal presentations, and donor activities. Attend CISN senior leadership, affiliate fundraising and state office meetings and perform other tasks that may be assigned.
  • Attract, lead, manage and develop staff; delegate to them; transfer knowledge; and elevate their skills.
  • Foster camaraderie and collaboration throughout the department; hold to clear standards of Communities In Schools of Nevada culture and values.
  • Manage confidential information. Must be able to work with a variety of personalities and positions in a high-touch way.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, plus ten (10) years of non-profit experience, with at least seven (7) years of experience directly related to the job.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and secure large gifts; experience with developing and implementing annual giving, major gifts, and planned giving programs; experience with major grants, marketing, and public relations; experience with managing and evaluating direct mail campaigns and direct mail vendor relationships; experience using relational databases and creating and maintaining effective record-keeping systems; experience managing multi-million dollar budget and ability to manage larger scale events; may work significant number of hours in evenings and on weekends.

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodation, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of donor database management, preferably Donor Perfect.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for development design and coordination of CISN programs, activities, and events.
  • Knowledge of CISN practice, policy, and procedures.
  • Skills in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Skill in data analysis and complex problem solving.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priority.
  • Ability to design, create, market, and promote programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other School Administration employees and the public.
  • Social Skills: negotiation, persuasion, service orientation, social perceptiveness.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work environment is indoors and climate controlled. Occasionally, exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Moderate noise levels as found in a business office setting.
  • Ability to travel for affiliate and donor meetings, affiliate events, and other miscellaneous work assignments within the State of Nevada. Reliable transportation is a must.

**Starting salary is $103,000 but is negotiable depending on experience***
