Chief Advancement Officer

JOB SUMMARY

The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) is charged with securing private financial support for the College. The CAO must display a superb ability to communicate and relate to others, effectively relating the mission of the College to the objectives of individual donors and must be able to communicate funding needs and effectively ask for donor participation. The position reports to the College President.

MAJOR DUTIES

¿ Serves as the primary fundraiser for the College and the Foundation. Develops and implements a strategic fundraising plan each year in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer (COO. of the ABAC Foundation, and the Alumni Director.
¿ Identifies, cultivates, and solicits major gifts and planned gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and professional groups in support of strategic program priorities, including capital campaigns.
¿ Travels regularly to make visits to alumni, business and industry, foundations, and other friends of the College for the purpose of securing funds for the advancement of the College.
¿ Identifies and maintains an active pool of at least 100 prospects.
¿ Develops and implements targeted strategies to maximize the involvement of college officials and key volunteers in the pursuit of major gifts development effort.
¿ Develops strong relationships with ABAC Foundation and attends Foundation meetings and events. Cultivates annual, major, and planned giving directly from Foundation Trustees.
¿ Meets performance objectives that will result in funding and in the identification of new prospects each year.
¿ Lead and actively participate in donor recognition and special events (such as Evening for ABAC) in support of fundraising goals.
¿ Utilizes and maintains prospect tracking and contact reporting system through the donor/alumni database.
¿ Prepares written development proposals for donor prospects.
¿ Prepares support documentation for gift acceptance in accordance with ABAC Foundation accounting procedures.
¿ Supervises and provides direction to Alumni & Development staff, in support of ABAC¿s strategic goals.
¿ Performs a variety of related duties.

¿ Knowledge of advancement, development and alumni principles and practices.
¿ Demonstration of strong history of building a culture of philanthropy within an organization.
¿ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills both written and oral.
¿ Ability to cultivate relationships on campus, community, and region.
¿ Proficiency in organizing and prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
¿ Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.
¿ Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs such as Raiser¿s Edge.
¿ Skill in decision making and problem solving.
¿ Knowledge of Board of Regents policies and procedures.
¿ Knowledge of state and national issues related to higher education.
¿ Knowledge of budget development and management principles.
¿ Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
¿ The President provides oversight with meetings on occasion. However, this position requires the individual to be self-directed to lead this area within the guidance provided.
GUIDELINES
¿ Guidelines include the ABAC Strategic Plan, Student Handbook, FERPA regulations, Title IX regulations, and federal and state guidelines. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. This position develops unit guidelines.
¿ Accepted principles in the advancement field also guide the work efforts and decision-making process including the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Statement of Ethics and the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethical Standards.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
¿ The purpose of this position is to provide strategic leadership and direct supervision of the College¿s advancement, development, and alumni relations activities.
CONTACTS
¿ Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college employees, students, community partners/industry, alumni, donors, and members of the general public.
¿ Contacts are typically to solicit and steward support of the College from these individuals and organizations and to build partnerships/relationships to benefit the institution.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
¿ When in the office, work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
¿ Extensive travel is necessary to meet with alumni and donors across the state and southeast region.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has supervision over assigned units, functions, and/or areas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
¿ Bachelor¿s degree from an accredited institution required.
¿ Minimum of 5 years of experience in higher education that demonstrate increasing levels of responsibility and authority is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
¿ Master¿s degree or higher from an accredited institution preferred.
¿ At least 10 years of advancement experience in higher education that demonstrate increasing levels of responsibility and authority are preferred.
