SUMMARY
The Chief Academic Officer/Vice President of Academic Affairs is a key member of the Executive Leadership team at Jackson College and is responsible for overseeing the entire academic areas of the institution. This position works closely with faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners to provide strategic direction for academic programs and policies. The role ensures that educational offerings are of high quality, relevant, and aligned with the needs of the community, thereby fostering academic excellence and student success.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Strategic Academic Leadership - Collaborate with the President and other members of the Leadership Council to develop and implement the College's academic vision and strategy aligned with its overall institutional mission and Strategic Agenda;
  • Curriculum and Program Development - Oversee curriculum planning, development, and evaluation of the instructional program including a five-year academic master plan. Ensure academic programs are current, innovative, and responsive to community and workforce needs;
  • Accreditation and Compliance - Lead accreditation efforts for all academic programs and work to maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to Academic Affairs and the registrar;
  • Faculty and Staff Oversight - Manage the recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and professional development of faculty, part-time faculty, as well as academic staff. Encourage a culture of Academic excellence and continuous improvement;
  • Budget Management - Develop and manage the budget for the Academic Division, aligning resources with strategic priorities;
  • Student Success Initiatives - Coordinate with the Chief Student Services Officer and other departments to design and implement strategies that improve student retention, graduation rates, and overall academic success;
  • Community and Industry Partnerships - Develop and maintain strong relationships with K-12 schools, higher education institutions, employers, and community organizations to facilitate program development and student educational pathways;
  • Corrections Education, Dual Enrollment & the Jackson College Preparatory and Early College organization – Oversee the continuing development and success the College’s corrections program in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Corrections. Oversee and advance the growth of the College’s dual enrollment and partnership with the Jackson Career Access Network organization. Oversee the Jackson Preparatory and Early College, a public school academy;
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - Promote an instructional culture that values and practices inclusivity and actively works to enhance diversity among faculty, staff, and ensures curricular sensitivity to diverse cultures and contexts;
  • Continuing Education and Economic Development – Provide oversight and leadership to the Colleges Job Hub, economic development and workforce training initiatives, including maximizing the Michigan New Jobs Training Program;
  • State Representation - Represents the district as the Chief Instructional Officer at state meetings and conferences, serves as the College’s representative on committees, commissions, and other activities, makes presentations at meetings, workshops and events as assigned;
  • Contractual Obligations - Maintains compliance with the terms of contracts with employee bargaining units; participates in the negotiating process by assisting in the formation of negotiating strategy, formulating proposals and counterproposals and advocating the Board and management’s position;
  • Vital Communications - Maintains regular communication and working relationship with other areas of the college, keeping them informed of current activities and working with them to achieve institutional priorities.
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making - Utilize data and analytics to make informed decisions related to program quality, faculty and staff productivity, student retention and success, as well as resource allocation; and
  • Other Responsibilities - Participate in local, state, and national discussions regarding Academic Affairs in community colleges and undertake special projects as assigned by the President.
  • Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College’s beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.

  • CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

    Internal: Contact with all students, faculty, administration and other constituencies of the college.
    External: Regular community contacts with K-12 and Intermediate School Districts, other institutions of higher learning, civic organizations, business, industry, contractors, community committees and organizations, and the public.Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Masters degree in Education, Higher Education, Academic Discipline, or related field from an accredited institution.
    Minimum of 10 years of Academic experience in higher education, with at least 5 years in a significant leadership role.
    Proven track record of managing budgets, strategic planning, and leading academic programs.
    Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in Education, Higher Education, Academic Discipline, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Previous experience in a community college setting.
  • Knowledge of Michigan's higher education system and regulations.
