Overview
Laboratory Services is seeking a Chemistry Laboratory Technician to support submarine construction programs and to comply with city, state and federal regulatory requirements. This individual may be trained as an OSHA Competent Person, which entails classroom training along with on the job training for the atmospheric testing of confined spaces. The individual may also be trained to take environmental readings to support quality assurance aspects of submarine construction.
This work can be physically demanding requiring the individual to carry sampling equipment throughout the shipyard and aboard submarines in all weather conditions. The individual must be capable of entering confined and enclosed spaces, able to climb ladders and stairs and able to work at heights.
Candidate will be employed in a safety function which involves atmospheric checks of tanks and confined spaces along with setting up appropriate safety instructions along with issuing shipboard fire permits. Candidate will be required to use testing instrumentation to determine safe conditions along with appropriate safety requirements such as ventilation, fire safety, respiratory protection and similar requirements.

The position will require significant time aboard the vessels inside tanks and confined spaces along with an evaluation of fire safety requirements. The position is a physically demanding position requiring work in an industrial environment both inside and outside. There is a significant amount of walking, climbing, crawling and carrying equipment of 10 lbs or less.

Qualifications
Required:
- High School diploma or GED
- Associates degree in chemistry OR 5 years analytical laboratory experience OR 2 years of shipyard experience
Preferred:
- Familiarity with shipyard safety along with knowledge of OSHA requirements relating to atmospheric safety of tanks and confined spaces.
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related science is preferred.
- Knowledge of fire safety is a plus!
