Job description

Hill Air Force Base employs approximately 2,000 Civilian Scientists and Engineers to support the Air Force’s mission to fly, fight and win…in air, space and cyberspace. Employees acquire, sustain, modernize, and test some of the nation’s most powerful and technologically advanced weapon systems, including fighter jets, bombers, radar, ICBM’s, and satellite systems.

Hill AFB currently has a vacancy for an experienced Chemical/Process Engineer in the Commodities Maintenance Group at the Ogden Air Logistic Complex. This is a civilian position working directly for the Department of the Air Force.

Duties may include: Developing, improving, documenting and controlling chemical plating processes used for maintenance & repair of aircraft components and systems; Identifying and ensuring compliance for all required specifications needed for successful plating operations; leading investigations on failed aircraft parts to identify root cause and corrective actions; defining requirements for industrial process equipment purchases and providing technical oversight for the Government contract team; and working with mechanics, machinists, technicians, and other personnel to reduce costs and improve quality.

To successfully compete for this position, candidate must have the ability to operate at a journeymen level across a diverse skill set. Ideal candidate will:

  • Have the ability to act autonomously, self-identify projects, and work with minimal guidance or oversight.
  • Have the ability to establish Industrial Process Control (IPC) within an aircraft maintenance and overhaul operation. Candidate must have competency to: reduce costs, reduce defects, reduce flow times, and increase quality of items repaired by technicians on the shop floor; as well as have the ability to generate and track metrics to show improvement. To accomplish this, candidate will be required to: identify gaps and/or errors in customer provided technical data and work with different customer organizations to get them corrected, develop standardized methods and/or processes to perform repair operations so all shop personnel across all shifts are able to perform the same operation identically, develop and implement engineering controls to ensure operator safety and product repeatability through all phases of a repair operation, ability to interpret Government and/or industry specifications (OSHA, AMS, SAE, MIL-STD, etc.), develop methods of repair compliant with them, and communicate those requirements to technicians on the shop floor.
  • Have the ability to provide cradle-to-grave plating process support operations. Competency across the following functions is necessary: chemical reactions and titration experience, experience with plating in a production environment, diagnose and troubleshoot plating processes, read and understand MIL specifications, lead validation/verification exercise with tools on the shop floor and provide training to shop personnel applicable, identify and create testing plans for Chemical Processing, identify and create plating process plans.
  • Have the ability to lead an investigation into a failed part, identify root cause and corrective action(s), document all findings into a written report, brief multiple layers of leadership, and oversee implementation of corrective actions necessary to restore operations across the production line in a timely manner.
  • Have the ability to write technical portions of Government contracts (e.g. contracts to purchase shop equipment or outsource repair operations), follow those contracting efforts through their entire lifecycle, and be able to maintain enough awareness about their status that short, oral, briefings can be given to leadership with minimal notice.
  • Have the ability to establish and maintain relationships across a diverse range of people: from technicians on the shop floor, to tele-relationships with counterparts at other Military Bases, to senior leaders within the Organization and the ability to use those relationships to get projects accomplished.
  • Have the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time. This includes long term (multi-year) projects that are often idle while waiting for input from outside organizations. Candidate must have the ability to actively engage in short term projects while strategically managing long term projects. Successful candidates will have the ability to identify new projects and prioritize them based on return on investment as extra time becomes available.
