CHARLESTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT

GENERAL DUTIES

1. Exercise authority consistent with the obligations imposed by the oath of office.
2. Respond to all calls for service, rendering first aid when applicable.
3. Aid citizens requesting assistance or information.
4. Arrest persons for violating the law or those wanted by other law enforcement agencies.
5. Issue traffic citations, enforce motor vehicle laws and parking ordinances.
6. Seize, collect, preserve, transport, photograph, and inventory evidence and property taken into custody.
7. Maintain weapons and equipment in a state of operational readiness.
8. Promptly serve or deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers.
9. Coordinate efforts with other department employees to ensure that team work leads to the successful attainment of police short and long-term goals and objectives.
10. Maintain certification with assigned equipment.
11. Perform other duties, within the scope of their employment, as assigned by the division commander or Chief of Police.

SALARY

• $65,087 (Less than 1 year Law Enforcement experience)
• $72,155 (1 to 2 years Law Enforcement experience)
• $74,599 (More than 2 years Law Enforcement experience)
• $3,000 Hiring Bonus upon completion of mandatory one-year probation.

ABOUT THE TOWN OF CHARLESTOWN & THE POLICE DEPARTMENT

• Seasonal coastal community with a population that triples in the summer months.
• This recruitment process is in anticipation of openings within the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be at lease twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of application.
• Possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certification as a Police Officer
• Must possess and provide a copy of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen and provide a valid copy of your social security card.

• Must successfully pass a Physical and Psychological examination
• Must successfully pass an extensive Background Investigation

HIRING PROCESS

• POST Certified Police Officers DO NOT need to take the agility & written
• If application is complete and all paperwork is in order, POST Certified Officers will follow the below schedule;
• Interview
• Background investigation
• Physical Examination
• Psychological Testing
