Job description

The Addison Gallery of American Art seeks a collaborative, highly organized, flexible, and team-oriented individual to join a dynamic and fast-paced Curatorial department as the Charles H. Sawyer Curatorial Fellow. The Curatorial Fellow will report to the Robert M. Walker Curator of American Art and will provide key curatorial, research, and administrative support to the curatorial department. In addition, the Curatorial Fellow will work alongside the Director of Registration and Administration on cataloguing, data entry, and archival processing projects as needed. The successful candidate for this three-year term position will possess a strong interest in American art history and a willingness to embrace new opportunities for career growth and development.


This is an all year, 40 hours a week, three year position.


Essential Functions

  • Assist the curatorial department with all aspects of research, writing, planning, and organizing permanent collection and loan exhibition and related publications;
  • Provide administrative support, field research requests and submissions, draft correspondence, and contribute to the development and execution of project timelines;
  • Perform ongoing research on collection objects, artists, and potential acquisitions;
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Curatorial department, participating in exhibition, collection, and public program planning;
  • Collaborate with museum project partners including other museums, galleries, artists, guest curators, editors, designers, publishers, and in-house staff;
  • Write or collaborate on collection and exhibition-centered texts, including acquisition proposals, work labels and didactics, content for the museum website, press releases, and grant applications;
  • Work in close partnership with the Education department to contribute to programs related to the collection and special exhibitions for Phillips Academy and the public, including but not limited to lectures, workshops, tours, and other in-gallery interpretation offerings;
  • Work with the Director of Registration and Administration on cataloguing and database data entry projects as needed;
  • Contribute to the general promotion of the museum and its fundraising activities by serving as an ambassador for the Addison Gallery as an active member in the field and with the general public.

Qualifications
  • BA in art history or related discipline required
  • Previous museum or art-related experience is preferred but not required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including writing and public speaking
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Well-developed research abilities
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage shifting priorities
  • Proficiency with Adobe products and Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and PowerPoint
