The Office of Human Research Affairs (OHRA) directs and supports the UnitedHealth Group (UHG) Institutional Review Board (IRB). The office sits within the corporate facing legal, compliance and regulatory affairs team. The IRB is an autonomous decision-making body that is created through and managed by the OHRA staff. The IRB is a standing regulatory entity required to be used in settings where research or other human interactions are occurring.

Primary Responsibilities:

• The IRB is a responsible party for representing that all research and qualifying project work that involves either human participants or their identifiable data (or both) meet regulatory requirements for approval and are conducted in an ethical and inclusive manner
• Assist the Vice President, Human Research Affairs in leading the enterprise forward in innovation work and helping shape the future landscape of healthcare for our members and patients in a compliant and ethical manner
• Partner with researchers and those conducting projects for the best quality project work to produce the best possible experience for our members and patients who participate
• The Chair is responsible not only for reviewing the monthly agenda and associated materials for the monthly IRB meeting, but is also engaged in the process of determining if a project requires review by the convened IRB and in helping to address any concerns or questions that are raised after IRB review related to the findings
• The Chair is also responsible for reviewing any minimal risk project determinations that are made by authorized OHRA staff to confirm that there is a quality of review, and the appropriate level of risk and permissible research categories were utilized

Required Qualifications:

• A solid understanding of and experience in regulatory oversight of project work conducted with human participants and/or their identifiable data
• Knowledge and expertise of quality improvement and clinical care improvement work, as well as AI/ML project work and its impact of patient care and member coverage within UHG
• Ability to lead a diverse group of members of the UHG Institutional Review Board (IRB) and make and defend decisions related to project work approved to be conducted within our organization

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous research experience
• Prior experience serving on IRBs as a member and/or chair

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The hourly range for California/Colorado/Connecticut/Hawaii/Nevada/New Jersey/New York/Rhode Island/Washington residents is $16.00 to $20.05 per hour.
