GENERAL SUMMARY

Rely on expertise, knowledge and technical qualifications to interpret written industry and customer standards, specifications, regulations and site restrictions. Recommend or initiate direct actions required to meet and comply with all requirements. Identify issues related to the progress and quality of work performed by others and make decisions and recommendations required to satisfactorily address situations that involve staff of customers, contractors and company employees both on and off the right-of-way.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Reports directly to the Owner’s Project Engineer or Chief Inspector.
  2. Supply appropriate welding inspection tools and properly calibrated instruments for welding inspection. All instrumentation is to be calibrated and certified per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Documentation of calibration is to be kept by the Certified Welding Inspector and available for reference at the jobsite.
  3. Consults directly with the Owner, radiographer, and Contractor to reduce and eliminate welding related defects.
  4. Notify Project Engineer immediately of welds requiring repair or removal, per NDT.
  5. Summarizes daily activities on Owner supplied reports.
  6. Witnesses and evaluates welding procedure qualification tests, records the test results on Owner supplied forms, and submits them to Project Engineer.
  7. Observes welding to assure the work complies with State regulations, Standards, Codes, Specifications, and qualified welding procedures. Inspection equipment required for verification of welding activity shall be the responsibility of the AWS-CWI or the 3rd Party Inspection Vendor.
  8. Completes Owner supplied Weld Log and Visual Inspection Reports assigning weld numbers and location of welds by survey stationing using the following weld naming nomenclature unless otherwise specified and approved by the Project Engineer: X-Ray Weld, Tie-In Weld, Intermediate Weld, Repaired Weld, Cut-Out Weld, Dye-Penetrant NDT Weld, and Mag-Particle NDT Weld
  9. Records weld numbers on Owner supplied weld log, weld schematic and pressure test schematics. Weld log to be submitted to Project Engineer every two weeks during outage for review.
  10. Determines and verifies that proper qualified weld procedures are being used throughout the project.
  11. Ascertain that all welds are identified and all x-ray films or digital CDs with weld identification and locations corresponding to a survey station are properly stored and weld log is accurately maintained.
  12. Make sketches of spool pieces, crossings, and other special installations, indicating all dimensions, weld numbers, heat numbers, serial numbers, size of fittings, pressure rating, etc. and make available to individual responsible for redlines.
  13. At conclusion of project, supply Project Engineer with completed documentation as follows: Weld Log, NDT Reports, and Film and/or Digital CD

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Shall be a current American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (AWS CWI), or Senior Certified Welding Inspector (AWS SCWI), when used for visual weld inspections and as an evaluator to qualify contractors for welding.
  • Welding Inspectors used for visual inspections only, require any one of the following:
    o AWS/CWI certification
    o Qualified in visual weld inspection through the ASNT standard TC-1-A under a program approved and verified through the client's NDT lab.
