The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is responsible for the instruments, supplies, and equipment required for surgical procedure. Prior to procedures, the CST prepares the necessary supplies according to the needs of the surgeon for the case. The CST also monitors the PAR levels of all instruments during the operation and focuses on preserving the sterile field.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Collects supplies needed for surgical procedure and checks to ensure quality
- Performs the surgical scrub; dons gown and gloves
- Prepares instruments for procedure using sterile techniques
- Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the team
- Assists team with gowning and gloving
- Assists with the draping of the patient and establishing the sterile field
- Secures tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories
- Anticipates and prepares any additional supplies that may be required during the procedure
- Foresees the needs of the surgeon and passes instruments/supplies during procedure as needed
- Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions used during procedure
- Holds retractors or instruments as directed
- Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed
- Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure
- Performs additional counts when required
- Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices
- Prepares and passes of specimen(s) as appropriate
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
- Assists team with terminal cleaning of room
- Assists in prepping the OR for next patient
- Participate in debriefing and quality improvement plans to ensure quality patient care
- High School graduate or equivalent
- Graduate of approved Surgical Technologist School with certification
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Relevant knowledge of surgical procedures, techniques, and patient care
- Knowledge of HIPAA and compliance policies
- Strong analytical skills and technical skills relating to OR prep; ability to respond to needs as they arise in the OR
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred.
- Ability to communicate in a professional manner-- able to counsel/teach customers, train co-workers, and positively contribute to marketing/public relations. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from patients, regulatory agencies, or members of the medical and business community.
- Proficient computer skills- ability to accurately update and manage and electronic healthcare record
HOURS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Our ASCs are located in the DFW area (Precinct ASC in Hurst, TX, Frisco ASC in Frisco, TX and Park ASC in Plano, TX). The ASCs are open Monday thru Friday with hours of operation subject to change, dependent on surgery schedule.
Hazards: Occasional contact with communicable diseases, electrical equipment, blood borne pathogens, etc.
Personal protective equipment: Sterile OR scrubs and PPE are provided
