Job Summary and Responsibilities:
Trained technician who assists the physician and registered nurse in rendering professional care to patients undergoing surgical procedures within the center, in accordance with established procedures. Works under the direct supervision of the registered nurse. Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff exhibiting teamwork characteristics.

Experience:
Prefer 1 to 2 years of perioperative CST ophthalmology experience.
Acceptable is 1 to 2 years of hospital nursing experience.

Education:
Graduate of an accredited college for surgical technician.

Job Duties:

  • Competence in surgery technician performance
  • Competence in operating equipment and instrumentation with accuracy
  • Competence in sterile processing standards and skills
  • Handles patient specimens per procedure.
  • Competence in safe medication practices and policies
  • Ability to lead members of the patient care team (surgical conscience)
  • Maintain all requirements for current CST certification.
  • Cross trained in other ASC duties/committees [i.e., Infection Prevention, Safety, QAPI]
  • Assists with housekeeping responsibilities as a part of the ASC team’s expectations for a clean and orderly environment.
  • Accountable to the team by attendance and self-management of shift arrival and completion, as well as breaks.
  • Communication to patients help to alleviate undue stressors and offers reassurance.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as directed by the Clinical Director or Physician which are within their legal limitations.
  • Seeks educational opportunities and accepts responsibilities for own professional growth and development.  Participates with in-service opportunities and staff meetings.
  • Must maintain patient right to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitor’s family or patient.
  • Keeps all working areas clean, neat, and stocked.
  • Cleans rooms after each patient and leaves ready for the next patient.
  • Prepares for patients as requested by physician according to type of procedure.
  • Sets up and assists with all surgical procedure.
  • Knowledgeable of potential exposure to hazardous materials (i.e., patient body fluids, disinfectant chemicals).
  • Observes universal precautions policy.
  • Checks assignment for the day, noting general aspects of all cases.
  • Checks operating room for cleanliness and orderliness.  Damp dust rooms prior to use.
  • Scrubs hands and arms, dries, and dresses self with sterile gown and gloves according to perioperative principals.
  • Sets up sterile operating field with instruments and supplies necessary for that procedure; arranges instruments, sutures, drapes, and supplies in the manner specified by operating room principals.
  • Observes strict sterile and aseptic technique throughout the entire procedure.
  • Assist with gowning and gloving surgery staff.
  • Assists with draping the operative site.
  • Passes instruments, supplies, and sutures to the surgeon and assistants as needed and, in such manner, so that their attention is not diverted from the operating field.
  • Pays strict attention to the work of the operating team and anticipates their needs.
  • Keeps sterile tables neat and orderly.
  • Sees that all instruments, needles, sponges, and other supplies are removed from the operative field and discarded appropriately.
  • Responsible for always having correct sutures for surgeon.
  • Isolates “dirty” or contaminated instruments and supplies as used, to minimize the spread of infection.
  • Helps clean the room following a procedure by caring for instruments, supplies and equipment used in the sterile field.
  • Transfers properly prepared specimens for the laboratory.
  • Returns to room immediately following the case to prepare for the following procedure.
  • Assists circulating nurse with cleaning and restocking room at completion of assignment.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED, Surgical Technician Certification
  • Membership in surgical technology society for ongoing continued education.
  • Proficient in reading, speaking, and writing the English language.
  • Proficient in medical terminology.
  • Proficient in math calculations, and basic money handling.
  • Proficient in computer and printer technology.
  • Proficient in computer programs: MS Word, Excel, electronic patient management system [specific to practice]
  • Self-motivated independent in job responsibility, ability to critically think and process information.
  • Display a primary interest in rendering safe and effective care and maintaining standards of courtesy and friendliness to co-workers.
  • Physical presentation of neat, professional, well-groomed appearance.
  • Demonstrate reliability, pleasant attitude, and willingness to work toward an environment of trust and teamwork.
  • Communicate professionally verbally, non-verbally.
  • Communicate effectively with health care team members [Physicians, leadership, peers]
  • Speak with respect and compassion toward customers [Patients and significant others, physicians, leadership, peers]
  • Comply with patient confidentiality, HIPAA laws, and protected health information.
