Job Summary
The Certified Interpreter provides interpretation services to assist physicians, nurses, other clinicians and administrative staff in communicating with patients, their families and the community.
Certified Interpreter Scope and Requirements:
- Behaves in a culturally aware manner in order to build trust with patients and families. Leverages the trust to improve the communication between patients/families and the providers
- Ensures all requests and interpretation encounters are appropriately documented in the department's database (CRM)
- Ensures all non-interpretation tasks are appropriately documented
- Effectively communicates with peers to facilitate streamline operational flow of department
- Appropriately and accurately transmit information between provider and patient/family
- Must have medical terminology knowledge across multiple specialties. This includes but is not limited to: Medical, Surgical, Trauma, Heart and vascular, oncology, transplant, Pediatrics, Neuroscience
- Demonstrates flexibility in availability, assignments received, etc. to ensure the departmental operations are streamlined
- Communicates with manager effectively and timely regarding concerns
- Punctual to interpretations at all times

Must have minimum 2 to 3 years of experience specific to healthcare if you have a Bachelors degree.

Various Shifts: 8 hour shifts, 5 days per week
Rotating on call on weekends and holidays

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelors degree in a foreign language, communications or health care related field or 5 years related experience
Licenses/Certifications: Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) from NBCMI or CCHI
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
- Requires fluency in English and target language of interpretation
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Understanding of medical terminology preferred
Principal Accountabilities
- Interprets patient and/or family questions or concerns to appropriate healthcare staff to optimize the patient care experience.
- Acts as a conduit of information for all clinical services including medical terminology and support services, policies and procedures.
- Documents accurately, completely and clearly all interpretation services.
- Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication between patients/family, as it relates to medical care.
- Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
