Overview
Maternal Fetal Medicine Certified Nurse Midwife will function in an advanced practice provider (APP) role and perform selected tasks and services related to acute care and obstetric (OB) care on the inpatient OB unit to manage OB triage and laboring patients. When performing APP aspects of this role, the Certified Nurse Midwife must be able to engage in independent as well as co-operative decision making. When performing expanded aspects of the role that overlap with medicine, the Certified Nurse Midwife must function in collaboration with qualified physicians within the framework of jointly approved guidelines. The Certified Nurse Midwife not only must be prepared and competent to apply knowledge and skills, but also must be ready and willing to accept responsibility and accountability for their practice. The obstetric-gynecologic/women's health Certified Nurse Midwife provides such care in collaboration with physicians, as well as with other members of the health-care team.
Responsibilities
  • Provide acute care on the OB unit to manage OB triage and laboring patients.
  • Perform or request necessary evaluation, including imaging, as needed and appropriate to provide the OB care.
  • Provide direct inpatient care for antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum patients in OB triage, labor and delivery, antepartum and postpartum units in the hospital.
  • Assist in the delivery of uncomplicated OB patients who do not require an operative vaginal deliver or cesarean delivery.
  • Preform labor and delivery, including induction, fetal monitoring, vacuum extraction and episiotomy.
  • Prepare recovery room and postoperative care.
  • Round on inpatient OB patients admitted to the OB unit.
  • Provide postpartum care, including attention to parent and infant relationships, for women who have had pregnancies.
  • Facilitate discharge planning.
  • Obtain a complete health, psychosocial, obstetric, and gynecologic history and record findings in a systematic, accurate, and succinct form.
  • Perform a complete physical examination, with specific emphasis on the reproductive system.
  • Order, perform, and interpret routine laboratory tests.
  • Develop and implement plans for health promotion and health maintenance, including plans for disease prevention and provision of health education and counseling.
  • Provide periodic health assessment of normal, non-pregnant, and asymptomatic women.
  • Provide assessment, education, and management for family planning and fertility control.
  • Provide high risk prenatal care for women with pregnancies, giving attention to both maternal and fetal health.
  • Provide health education and counseling, with emphasis on physical and psychosocial dimensions of adolescence, sexuality, childbearing, parenting, climacteric, aging, and family life.
  • Co-manage care for patients with selected health complications in collaboration with the physician.
  • Arrange referrals to other members of the health-care team as needed and to community resources as appropriate.
  • Monitor and make recommendations to nursing policy and procedure manual to include development of nursing protocols and procedures for same.
  • Review, update and monitor nursing triage processes and protocols.
  • Partner with the Department Chair, Vice Chair and Practice Manager on quality standards, meaningful use, clinical workflows, nursing education and the delivery of exceptional patient care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Midwifery (MSM) required. Must hold an active RN license and an active Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license with a Certified Nurse Midwife specialization by the Virginia Board of Nursing. Must have a national certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board. Experience as a Nurse Midwife with obstetric patients is preferred.
