Responsibilities*

Responsibilities*

To provide specialized care and management of patients during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum.

  • Coordinates overall flow of patients through the Birth Center triage, intrapartum and postpartum areas to ensure sensitive and quality care delivered in a timely manner.
  • Evaluates and orders laboratory or other studies, develops plans and provides direct patient care.
  • Round on and discharge postpartum patients including assessment and education.
  • Consults with Attending Obstetric staff as necessary.
  • Provides direct supervision and education to physicians-in-training and students.
  • Participates in education of medical students, nurse-midwifery students, nursing staff and students
  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of guidelines for care management for the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum patients.
  • Works days, nights and weekend shifts and is available for additional urgent coverage as needed.

Organizational Relationships:

  • Reports to the Director of Nurse-Midwifery Service
  • Collaborative/consultant relationship with faculty physicians and senior House Officers in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology related to medical aspects of nurse-midwifery practice.

Position Description

  • Associate staff nurse-midwives are non-bargained for, hourly employees who work to fill in during non-scheduled and scheduled paid time off. Therefore, a consistent schedule each month is not guaranteed.
  • Associate staff will be paid as following:
    • Straight time for hours worked.
    • Time and a half for hours worked during holidays.
    • No benefits, including professional development money. (Staff may request money for specific educational needs ? this will be given per service director?s ability to grant this request).
    • Paid hour for hour for mandatory training requirements.
    • Paid hour for hour for time spent at staff meetings.
    • UMHS to pay for mandatory requirements such as BLS,
  • Associate staff are required to possess the same skills as regular staff
  • Associate staff may be asked to work in the outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and OB triage.
  • Each Associate Staff person will be required to work at least 36 scheduled hours during the month when needed and not more than a full-time staff person. At times, the service will not need this much coverage from the Associate Staff. The service director will take the following into consideration when assigning coverage:
    • Seniority
    • Availability to fill the service need.
    • Match the need to the skills of the person.
  • Associate staff are also expected to share the burden of covering for urgent staffing needs.
  • Other requirements of Associate Staff:
    • Attend monthly staff meetings or review minutes.
    • Attendance at departmental events in accordance with the expectations of the Ob/Gyn Department to maintain credentialing.
    • Complete mandatories, employee health requirements and participate in yearly evaluations.
    • Participate in training that are required to provide patient care UMH such as computer training.
  • Other exceptions to regular staff requirements.
    • No holiday requirements.
    • Do not need to bid for PTO.

End of Employment

  • Associate staff is expected to give 8 weeks notice when terminating employment.
  • Service Director is expected to give 8 weeks notice when their services are not longer consistent with the needs of the service.
  • If termination is due to disciplinary reasons or documentation of poor clinical performance, no notice is required.

Nursing Specific Info

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

Required Qualifications*

  • Current Michigan license to practice as a Registered Nurse
  • Current Michigan license to practice as a Certified Nurse-Midwife
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse-Midwifery program
  • Master?s Degree in Nursing, Midwifery or Public Health

Work Schedule

Hours/Week: Variable as needed by the department.

Shift/Hours/Days: Days, shift length and hours may vary based on department needs.

Note: This is a temporary position without any guarantee of hours. Work could be offered intermittently.

This job opening is for a Unit-Based Temporary Certified Nurse Midwife position
  • Please note that these positions do not qualify for Michigan Medicine benefits and specific terms and conditions of employment are negotiated at the department level.
These positions are not covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U of M Professional Nurse Council.
