Job description

MUST posses an active Connecticut Medication Administration Certification through the Department of Social Services (DSS) to apply. MUST be willing to work every other weekend, and holidays.

Classification: Hourly, 6:30 AM - 2:30 PM; 2:30 PM to 10:30PM, and/or 10:30 PM - 6:30 AM

Reports to: Registered Nurse Supervisor

Essential Functions

  • Provide assistance, as needed, to residents with their activities of daily living; ensure residents are aware of and receive the services to which they are entitled in a safe environment that promotes their rights, dignity and freedom of choice.
  • Administer and document residents’ medications, treatments and vital statistics as per physician’s written orders and in accordance with SOUTHMAYD policies and procedures.
  • Make rounds to see each resident during shift; prioritize the specific needs of residents; organize and communicate work assignments to resident care aides.
  • Eat meals with residents in dining room in order to perform Heimlich maneuver and/or give assistance as needed; ensure other staff is present should the need arise to be absent.
  • Respond to emergencies in a calm, efficient manner and take appropriate actions as required.
  • Communicate changes in residents’ physical and/or mental status or condition and other pertinent information; provide daily shift reports and other periodic reports; maintain accountability for controlled substances and notify the Executive Director of discrepancies or issues.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as required, to support our mission of providing, “to self-sufficient women over the age of 60, a residence that is safe and nurturing in a family-like atmosphere.”
  • Equipment/machines used in the performance of this job:Telephone, fax machine, photocopier, elevator, scales, showers, whirlpool equipment, adjustable beds, electronic blood pressure, blood sugar and body temperature monitoring devices and various other equipment and supplies.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises the current shift’s resident care aide(s); can request assistance of the kitchen staff.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • May need to stand for long periods of time and walk to and from locations within the building while making rounds; may sit, bends reach and move intermittently during working hours; may need to lift objects weighing 50 pounds or less; also may need to lift, transfer, and/or support residents.
  • Frequent washing of hands; exposure to housekeeping/cleaning agents and/or chemicals.
  • Exposed to residents’ conditions, unpleasant sights, smells and contagious diseases; rare exposure to blood and/or body fluids.
  • May be requested to stay in an emergency, work different shifts, weekends and/or holidays in order to ensure a nurse/head aide is on duty at all times.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily and:

  • Must possess an active Connecticut issued Medication Administration Certification through DSS
  • Must be proficient in reading, writing and mathematics skills.
  • Must be proficient in knowledge of drug interactions, side effects, and incompatibilities; as well as observational and assessment skills;
  • Must be able to hear and respond to pages and able to communicate to residents and emergency personnel in English.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An active Connecticut issued Medication Administration Certification
  • Valid certification from a CT state-approved course for Medication Administration
  • A minimum of one year's experience in the care of the elderly is preferred.
