MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIRED SKILLS
- Current and valid Illinois Paraprofessional License.
- Proficiency in both English and Spanish and passed the state approved language proficiency tests or combination of education and experience that allows exemption per Illinois Administrative Code.
- Ability to translate English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training as outlined by Illinois Administrative Code.
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently as a team member.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel within District.
- Able to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
The Certified Translator will primarily be responsible for the translation of IEP meetings, acting as the bridge between school and home. This will include both oral and written translation. The Certified Interpreter will be responsible for developing enhanced parent/school communication, increasing opportunities for parents to participate as partners with school in the academic and social growth of their children, and assisting parents in connecting with community resources.
- Interpret and translate during IEP meetings, 504 meetings, evaluations, conferences, and other meetings
- Contact parents as directed concerning issues relevant to child's IEP, student performance or school services at school. Report this feedback to pertinent Special Services or School staff.
- Assist with the translation of Parent-Student Handbooks, policies, and other documents as needed by the Student Services and Bilingual department.
- Complete at least six hours of training on special education terminology and protocol.
- Complete at least nine hours of training on the following:(1) interpreting in and out of English; (2) interpretation standards of practice, ethics, and confidentiality; (3) the role of the Interpreter and role boundaries; and (4) respect, impartiality, professionalism, cultural competence and responsiveness, and advocacy for communication and cultural needs. Note, this training need also include videos demonstrating proper and improper interpretation techniques.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, in English and Spanish
- Participate in general staff meetings, training programs, and in-service sessions when available.
- Assist district and schools by communicating with families throughout the District, when translating is needed, and report feedback to necessary school personnel.
- Process data, create and maintain documents, databases and other multimedia products.
- Translate announcements, forms, and notices as directed by the immediate supervisor.
- Maintain regular daily attendance and maintain accurate and complete records of translated documents.
- Other duties assigned.
- $20.00/hour Plus Benefits
