Job Description
As defined by the American College of Surgeons, the surgical assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The Certified Surgical Tech/Certified First Assistant (CST/CFA) is under the direct and immediate supervision of a surgeon and performs in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. The CST/CFA may take a scrub role when not needed as a first assistant.
- Associate’s Degree.
- Minimum 3 years of operating scrub experience in the majority of surgical services lines.
- Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited surgical assistant program.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
- Assist with positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient or perform these actions independently if so directed by the surgeon.
- Perform intraoperative tissue manipulation by exposing the retracting tissue.
- Assist with the completion of procedures by affixing and stabilizing drains and dressings.
Credentials and Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of operating scrub experience in the majority of surgical services lines.
- High School Diploma/GED.
- Certified Surgical Tech (CST).
- Certified First Assistant (CFA).
- BLS.
