Duties and Responsibilities

*Serve as the Certified Athletic Trainer for assigned sports.
*Render care and management of injuries and illnesses to student-athletes for all team workouts and contests of assigned sport(s). Coverage includes traveling with the team approx. 2-3 times a month for trips of 5-7 days on average.
*Administer first aid treatment as required by the situation, including life giving first aid, CPR and AED. Required to deal with potentially health hazardous situation. (i.e. communicable diseases-colds, flu, AIDS, skin infections, etc.)
*Assess risk of injury, perform ergonomic evaluation and coaching, self-care implementation, overall wellness promotion, and prevention strategies. *Implement and monitor athletic training programs for rehabilitation and reconditioning per student-athlete's diagnosis and current condition.
*Assist the Team Physician and Head Athletic Trainer in deciding whether or not a student-athlete is physically able to compete.
*In case of major injury or illness, refer the student-athlete to the Team Physician. If the Team Physician or Head Athletic Trainer cannot be contacted in emergency situations, make arrangements for the student-athlete to receive competent medical care.
*Assist in implementing and supporting the Department concussion management plan.
*Provide game day training services which may require supporting visiting team student-athletes.
*In the absence of the Head Athletic Trainer, individual may be in charge of the athletic training room operations.
*Assist in coordinating athletic training room procedures (i.e. taping, treatment, equipment usage, etc.)
Stay abreast of current literature and trends in the principles and practices of athletic training.

*Develop and/or presents to Head Athletic Trainer oral reports and/or recommendations. Works as a team member to identify, coordinate, and evaluate challenges.
Monitor inventory and supply orders from onset to completion, coordinates and initiates expediting actions.
*Assist in general maintenance of modalities and rehabilitation equipment. *Recommend changes to program policies and standard operating procedures to improve operations to achieve the most effective and efficient service. *Coordinate scheduling medical appointments and transportation for the student athlete.
*Maintain accurate and up to date medical records and progress notes in the Electronic Medical Record system, and communications with team physicians for each student-athlete injury and illness.
*Review injury and surgical reports and keep coaches, team physician, athletic training staff, medical consultants, and media relations director informed on status of injured student-athletes (as appropriate).
*Provide general counseling and guidance to student-athletes for medical (i.e. injuries, illnesses, rehabilitation, nutritional questions, etc) and non-medical (i.e. interpersonal, social, behavioral, etc) problems including making appropriate referrals.
*Schedule, participate and administer pre-participation physical exams for all student-athletes to determine if they are physically/mentally able to compete. *Supervise, educate, evaluate athletic training students and athletic training volunteers.
*Coordinate on/off field medical procedures with team and/or home team physician and medical staff. Must ensure that proper athletic training supplies, medications, modalities, and equipment are packed and transported with team to playing sites.
*Work with equipment managers and staff in consultation with the appropriate Head Coach to determine whether equipment is appropriate for the sports (i.e. enough or how much protection is provided, if it's safe, etc..)
*Maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the Athletics Department.
*Promote and maintain an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well being of all student-athletes are a priority.
*Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
*Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.

*Know, recognize, and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.
Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if you have reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others have occurred or will occur.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in athletics training, physical education, kinesiology or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for athletic training in intercollegiate sports medicine; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of athletic training in intercollegiate sports medicine as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with athletic training in intercollegiate sports medicine.
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Valid Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer.
Valid CPR/AED Certification.
Must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays during athletic related scheduled events.
Ability to administer physical therapeutic treatment after evaluating the athlete's limitation and explain and instruct the student-athlete in adhering to the treatment plan.
Ability to apply the knowledge and skills to treat, stabilize and transport student athlete with an injury.
Ability to apply CPR, fracture immobilization, control hemorrhage, evaluate injuries, etc.
Considerable knowledge of the general principles of personal hygiene, nutrition, and first aid treatment of injuries and illnesses.
Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques associated with intercollegiate sports medicine.
Must possess Certified Athletic Trainer License with the State of Hawai'i (or upon hire).
Working knowledge of applicable NCAA, OSHA, and HIPAA standards.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Desirable Qualifications

Division I/II/III, NAIA or Community College athletic training experience.
Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, understanding and working effectively in multicultural societies, similar to Hawai'i, contributing to an inclusive environment.
