Classroom Teacher Job Description
Job Title: Elementary Classroom Teacher
Credentials: Current Oklahoma Certificate or License with endorsements for appropriate level/subject area.
Education: Bachelor's Degree in education or related field from college/university recognized by the Oklahoma Board of Education.
Reports to: Building administrators.
Contract: 182 days (+ New Teacher Induction week for teachers new to NPS).
FLSA Classification: Exempt.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Possess a broad scope and knowledge of relevant subject matter and be acquainted with recent pedagogical developments.
  • Participate in and contribute to NPS' curriculum development programs.
  • Understand and apply sound principles of childhood development related to physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth.
  • Understand and utilize a variety of strategies to facilitate participation and learning by all students.
  • Translate lesson plans into learning experiences that effectively utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Establish and adjust procedures to ensure that district and site objectives are attained despite individual student differences.
  • Provide clear direction and instruction. Related objectives, involve all learners, demonstrate required skill, adjust based on monitoring, guide practice, and establish closure.
  • Make assignments related to objects and arrange for differentiated assignments to meet the needs and abilities of all students.
  • Evaluate students' academic growth fairly and impartially, utilizing standardized tests, as well as teacher designed assignments. Administer group-standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program.
  • Keep appropriate and accurate records and prepare reports relating to students' progress and needs.
  • Cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Organize classroom routines to minimize classroom disciplinary problems. Handle all but the most serious classroom disciplinary problems without administrative involvement.
  • Establish and maintain necessary standards of student behavior to achieve a positive and functional learning environment without negatively impacting other classrooms.
  • Be familiar with and abide by ALL district policies and procedures.
  • Be familiar with and effectively teach adopted courses of study including selecting and using appropriate materials.

  • Assist special education students with academic, social, and personal needs.
  • Keep required records in an efficient and legible manner and in accordance with all district requirements.
  • Present a professional appearance appropriate to assigned duties.

  • Perform other related duties assigned by the principal.
  • Perform teaching and reporting requirements as identified as a part of the state and federally funded programs.

Knowledge:
  • Personnel - Knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, labor relations, and personnel information systems.
  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including the definition and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, and basic computations regarding addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Customer and Personal Services - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes when a customer needs assessment and meeting the quality standards for services and the evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Skills:
  • Communication Skills: A teacher must possess and demonstrate effective communication skills as he/she exchanges information, gives and receives instructions, responds to inquiries, completes forms, and prepares correspondence. Teachers must have the ability to write legibly. A teacher must also demonstrate an excellent knowledge of grammatical structure, spelling and vocabulary. Teachers must communicate in a clear and grammatically correct manner at all times.
  • Performance Measures: A teacher performs skilled, professional leveled tasks under limited supervision to provide the appropriate teaching strategies and environment for student learning. This includes but is not limited to; developing lesson plans, teaching, evaluating student progress, assigning grades, accomplishing curriculum objectives, meeting with parents and staff to enhance the learning process and growth of the students, utilizing discretion, ingenuity, and independent judgment to meet the challenges of the job. Teachers must establish guidelines/syllabus with the appropriate instructional objectives, maintain classroom discipline, encourage learning with effective teaching techniques, and promote acquisition of skills and knowledge to apply principles, theories, and other learning objectives. Teachers must also monitor student progress (grading, feedback, behavior, etc..), provide an environment that encourages independent thinking and demonstrates care and assistance for students with special concerns or needs.
  • Contact with Others: A teacher has regular contact with patrons, students, and staff. Teachers must; interpret and translate facts and information; explain situations and issues; identify alternative courses of action; and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
