Job description

Position: Central Processing Assistant

Department: Central Processing Department (CPD)

Schedule: 40 hours, Days

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Central Processing Supervisor, the Central Processing Assistant is responsible for transportation, cleaning, kit assembly, and equipment maintenance of instruments, supplies, and equipment. The Central Processing Assistant is expected to pick up and deliver sterile and contaminated instruments within the Central Processing Department (CPD), the Operating Rooms, Labor and Delivery, Ambulatory Clinics, and other customer departments. As needed, the Central Processing Assistant assists with breakdown and resupply of disposable items.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Rounds to inpatient and ambulatory clinic locations to collect contaminated instrumentation and return it to CPD for reprocessing. Transports sterile and high-level disinfected instrumentation to clinic and inpatient locations. Under supervision of the Central Processing Supervisor, is responsible for the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and unsterile instruments, equipment, and supplies. Works with Materials Coordinator to assist with receiving, breakdown, and restock of disposable supplies in CPD. Notifies Materials Coordinator if stock is running low. Carries pager while on duty and responds to pages in a timely manner. Performs all duties with a customer service focus. Represents the hospital and Nursing department in a professional, courteous manner in all dealings with other hospital employees, vendors, patients and visitors. Treats patients in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and patient rights. Maintains cleanliness and neatness of work and lounge areas. Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission. Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures. Follows infection control policies. Remains knowledgeable of and follows department policies and procedures. Completes mandatory educational requirements, e.g., safety regulation and infection control review, departmental and unit specific competencies, etc. Stock supplies and assist staff with packaging devices. Maintains a presentable appearance in accordance with dress code. Wears assigned uniform, pager and visible ID badge while on duty. Remains knowledgeable of and demonstrates reliability in regard to established work rules and policies such as hours of work, attendance, punctuality standards, work assignments etc.

OTHER DUTIES:

Performs other duties as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Work requires a high school diploma or GED.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

None

EXPERIENCE:

Requires 6-12 months of experience in customer service or patient transportation.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Requires heavy lifting and pushing, pulling and standing.

Requires the interpersonal skills necessary to communicate clearly to interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff.

Work requires demonstrated ability to effectively speak, read, and write English.

Work requires ability to follow instructions, work independently and efficiently to complete assigned work.
