The Mechanical Engineering Intern will be introduced to the Refinery in the Reliability Department and will become familiar with the Refinery organization and processes. The Intern will provide assistance for technical services throughout their assignment. The Intern will support the development of various engineering packages, complete basic engineering research on specific assignments, and update engineering records as required. This assignment may also involve the updating of various engineering related databases. A presentation to senior leadership at the end of term is expected covering all aspects of the internship experience and accomplishments.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least a junior level Mechanical Engineering student and must have completed the following courses: Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, and Statics and Strength of Materials before beginning the internship.

OR

 

  • Must be a full-time Mechanical Engineering student with at least 30 hours completed (Sophomore, Junior, or Senior).

OR

 

  • Enrolled (at least part-time) in a graduate level program.

 

Candidates must be able to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credentials Card)

Must have current valid drivers license

GPA of 3.0 or above (A=4.0)

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: The Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with the rules established by the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration. Candidates selected for employment must meet eligibility criteria to obtain a TWIC card.

Job Duties
  • Assist CCR Reliability Engineers, Inspectors and/or Metallurgists in providing technical support for a variety of refinery units in order to achieve reliable equipment performance and maximize equipment mechanical availability while meeting the company's safety, environmental, and economic objectives.
  • Assist in providing engineering services, such as mechanical equipment design, inspection data analysis, fitness for service evaluations, equipment repair plan development, materials selection, root cause analysis of mechanical or corrosion related failures, troubleshooting equipment performance, and developing recommended maintenance practices.
  • Perform routine engineering calculations (i.e., determinate statics, mechanical stress (normal, shear, bending, hoop), fluid flow, heat transfer, and remaining life projections).
  • Assist in analyzing and interpreting pertinent inspection data to determine equipment life and develop repair or improvement plans.
  • Work with Process Engineers to design and install new projects and other improvements to the refining units.
  • Recognize Safety, Health and Environmental issues that impact the unit, the refinery, and all personnel. Interpret instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions.
  • Assigned Special Projects usually to include one or more of the following: equipment design, preparation of specifications, equipment integrity evaluations, research investigations, report preparation, and other activities of limited scope requiring knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in the specific area of assignments.
