Summary:
The Cattle Buyer is responsible for locating, monitoring, managing, and procuring cattle and calves in accordance with instructions from the Head of Cattle Procurement. The Cattle Buyer will support the company by providing accurate and timely cattle and analytical market reports to drive procurement processes. The cattle and calf buyer is expected to travel 80% of the time. Their territory will cover all Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states.
As a key member of the procurement team, the Cattle Buyer will conduct actions to meet cattle requirements for the company and assist with accurate forecasting and planning to meet future needs.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for cattle procurement and associated activities.
- Responsible for cattle and calf procurement from producers, dairies, and livestock auctions.
- Work with independent contractors to satisfy cattle requirement for Copper City Meats and Open Range Beef.
- Coordinate with producers and cattle feeders to monitor cattle numbers in their area.
- Coordinate with plant personnel to coordinate freight and logistics.
- Responsible for coordinating with Head of Cattle Procurement bidding procedures and prices
- Internal Communication and Relationships: frequent communication with Head Cattle Buyer, Coworkers, Accounting Department and other plant personnel regarding purchasing, quantity, and quality of live cattle.
- External Communication and Relationships: frequent communication with farmers and truckers regarding purchase, quality, quantity, and delivery of live cattle.
Qualifications:
- Education: Minimum High School Diploma with Agriculture knowledge and background
- Previous experience in livestock procurement is required
- Ability to visually assess, grade, and accurately estimate potential yield of cattle and other livestock
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to physically maneuver among and manipulate live cattle and livestock
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Employee will typically work 50-55 hours per week, Monday - Friday with weekend work as required.
- Employee will spend approximately 80% of work time traveling.
