Position Summary: This is a hands-on, full-time position managing the Operations Value Added Specialist to ensure the specifications, food safety, and quality of all products produced by performing the following duties personally or through vendor partners.

Compensation: $70,000 - $75,000 per year
Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities

Operations & Production

  • Oversees weekly productions at Skylark Meats (vendor partner) and other various processing partners as needed.
  • Ensures that operations and techniques utilized in production optimize yields. 
  • Communicate directly with the supervisor/manager and scheduling team on production concerns and opportunities.
  • Conduct specification audits on raw materials used in production and report findings. 
  • Conduct packaging audits on finished goods to ensure proper packaging and labeling specifications.
  • Conduct yield tests on new raw materials utilized in production and on new finished goods to be produced.
  • Daily monitoring of finished goods packaging weights to ensure regulatory compliance and optimize production yields.

Value Added

  • Assists in new programs and new product implementation. 
  • Ensures that food safety and monitoring program implementation meets corporate and regulatory standards.
  • Understanding of SQF Level 2, SSOP, GMPs, and HACPP CCP as required in the protein environment.
  • Conducts inspections of processes, ensures compliance with applicable food laws and regulations, and verifies plant HACCP plan.
  • Evaluate and examine the company's product specifications with customer requirements to meet all specifications and controls.
  • Must consistently understand, evaluate, and execute the tests and procedures correctly and investigate the product modifications.
  • Responsible for directing /Assisting production in testing and measuring product (yield) and tabulating the data relating to product quality and materials.
  • Monitors and inspects finished product items to ensure conformance to specifications—records on quality control sheets and electronic QA tablets.
  • Inspects returned products and determines disposition—records on quality control sheets.
  • Ensure all packaging, labeling, and products meet Meyer and customer specifications.
  • Back up for Daily Monitoring and Reporting of Ground Beef Evaluations.
  • Back up for shipping samples.
  • Back up lab samples.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Special Skills Needed To Be Successful:

  • Bachelor's degree with a preferred emphasis in food technology/science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years of related experience in Operations or Quality Control
  • 5+ or more years of experience with protein, specifically in the beef, pork, and chicken industries, is strongly required.
  • Must have experience and knowledge of managing and overseeing production yields.
  • Strong understanding of operations and quality assurance preferred.
  • Analytical skills are required, as well as the ability to multi-task.
  • Exceptional Attention to Detail - The job requires being careful about detail and completing tasks thoroughly.
  • Ability to follow all safety and plant protocols established.
  • May travel to various plants throughout the US and Canada.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, lift, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to talk or listen. The employee must regularly stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Daily presence on the production floor, loading dock, and in cooler areas with fork truck traffic and applicable safety equipment requirements must be strictly adhered to.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and should do so in a sound and safe manner. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus—a particular ability to hear and respond to communicate with employees, customers, producers, and vendors.
