Position Description:
The Early Childhood Support Specialist (ECSS) of Catholic Charities Diocese of Arlington (CCDA), Migration and Refugee Services Program (MRS), assists refugee children in all applicable geographical areas under the Virginia Refugee Student Achievement Project (VRSAP). The Early Childhood Support Specialist (ECSS) will be responsible for performing and maintaining support services for refugee children from age 0-5 and their parents in their resettlement and integration in the United States. The Early Childhood Support Specialist (ECSS) will get the opportunity to work with diverse group of refugees from diverse cultures and backgrounds. He/ She will use a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, resilience-building approach to encourage active parent engagement social and emotional development of their children. ECSS will support families in resource acquisition in collaboration with other team of case Mangers.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provides families with orientation to the head start program and other Early Childhood enrichment resources.
- Completes the intake interviews to determine eligibility of families for program and maintains accurate and updated family case files for each child enrolled.
- Provide language-appropriate resources to insure clear communication.
- Assists to enroll children in head start program and other Early Childhood educational activities.
- Encourages refugee parents to become more involved and play an active role in their children's education and assists in the development of a comprehensive plan for the parent engagement.
- Develops community partnerships with other providers to address the needs of families and children and implements activities around parent training, and or support groups to meet the goals of the families.
- Collects and maintains records which document parent involvement in the program.
- Makes periodic home visits for families to provide additional support, when needed.
- Refers parents to available resources in the community that address identified goals/needs; makes and accepts referrals for children and families with-in MRS.
- Maintains regular contact and communication with serviceproviders and parents regarding refugee child progress/concerns.
- Conduct collaboration meetings regarding children concerns.
- Maintain refugee student database to track participating students
- Establishes and carries out effective outreach initiatives to identify resources for the program.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Knowledge of refugee resettlement preferred.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally both internally.
- Represent Catholic Charities/MRS at conferences, trainings, and meetings in the community.
- Familiarity with Northern VA Early Childhood resources.
- Create a cooperative and positive relationship with colleagues, clients, and US Ties.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Office products.
- Must have a valid U.S. driver's license, 3 years of U.S. driving experience and have a good driving record. Willing to drive clients in agency vehicles
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in human services or related fields, required.
- 2 years relevant work experience
Physical Demands:
Sitting for periods of time and some light lifting up to 25 lbs.
