Job Summary The Center for Academic Success (CAS) seeks four (4) Graduate Assistants to serve as Assistant Academic Coaches for undergraduate students across all disciplines of the University. Academic Coaching provides a structured, collaborative approach to support students and is intended to increase a student's ability to become a more self-directed learner by identifying learning strategies and academic resources that best match the student's individual preference for processing information. Academic Coaches provide individualized guidance and ongoing feedback to students throughout the semester.
Responsibilities Under the supervision of a professional staff member, provide Academic Coaching for students from all disciplines, including conducting initial assessments and providing ongoing coaching in the form of bi-weekly student meetings. Document each coaching session. Collaborate with professional staff members to research and plan specialized academic support models for individual students who may need additional assistance in the areas of study skills, metacognition, critical thinking, self-motivation, goal setting, note-taking, time management, and organization.
Track student progress throughout the semester and in subsequent semesters. Administer Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) and work with students to increase competency in the areas noted for improvement. Respond to alerts or referrals from faculty regarding students in need of academic support.
Conduct visits to present information on study skills, note-taking, time management, critical thinking, goal setting, etc. Collaborate with other CAS staff to support students academically. Promote student awareness of the CAS and LHSSC and all programs/services offered.
Collaborate with professional CAS and LHSSC staff to support programming and the universitys student population. Other special projects as assigned. The Assistant Academic Coach must be available to work up to 19 hours each week and must be able to work between the hours of 8 am and 9 pm, typically Monday- Friday, with an occasional weekend, through the end of the semester.
The office for this position will be located either in Edgewater Hall or Laker Hall. This position will begin in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024 Required Qualifications The ideal candidate will be student-focused, organized, and detail-oriented and has excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate must have demonstrated success as a student with an undergraduate and graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The candidate must have the ability to handle confidential data with discretion and tact while being able to work independently and in a team environment. The ideal candidate should have experience presenting information to small and large groups; public speaking is an essential skill for this role. The ideal candidate should be able to help students in the following areas: Establishing and maintaining positive daily routines Identifying campus resources Establishing good study habits and setting realistic weekly study goals Avoiding procrastination Connecting study strategies that fit individual learning preferences.
