Summary
The DMTS Port RoadCaribou Monitor will monitor the Red Dog Port Road for caribou that may be present in the area surrounding the mine and port.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure RDO traffic is adhering to the Caribou SOPs for slowing down and/or stopping when caribou are present.
- The caribou observers will be expected to radio caribou, wolf, bear, or other wildlife locations to the Port Hopper and other traffic on the DMTS Port Road when noticed.
- Take appropriate notes on the numbers and behavior of the observed animals.
- Notify supervisor of any infractions detrimental to site SOPs.
- Submit documented notes and observations to immediate supervisor on weekly basis.
- Adhere to all company and site safety regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Desire to work outside and sometimes in inclement weather, with minimal supervision.
- Ability to take/keep organized notes regarding caribou observations.
- Previous field based team work experience preferred.
- Ability to work at night (darkness).
- A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy preferred.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather: Indoors/Outdoors, with frequent exposure to moderate to harsh weather conditions. Requires work to be done both inside and outside.
Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Description of environment: Most work will be from light vehicle truck in/around Red Dog DMTS Port Road material site observation points. Occasional work in standard office settings.
Physical requirements: Employee is required to occasionally to sit for long periods of time and view caribou through binoculars, spotting scope, and infrared night vision monoculars.
Travel: Work will be based at the Red Dog Mine Site. This will require travel via small plane to the mine. Caribou viewing locations may be accessible via truck.
