SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This position actively participates in all functions of General Cargo and works directly with customers to satisfy requirements for the efficient disposition of cargo transiting through the terminal. Primary function is to provide support to the General Cargo Terminal Operations to ensure efficient movement of cargo through accurate record keeping and positive customer service.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

  • Communicate with customers, shipping agencies, trucking companies, rail companies, stevedores, and the U.S. Customs office concerning inventory at the Port, tariff rates, storage charges, ship arrival/departure dates, customs clearance issues, vessel cargo releases, etc.
  • Prepare paperwork daily for CFS ops, truck and rail pickups and deliveries.
  • Maintain Port inventory system including importation of manifest data as necessary, inventory locations, system entries, etc. Update inventory locations as necessary. Prepare discharge reports for supervisors on import cargo.
  • Troubleshoot problems as they arise, delivering information to the warehouses if necessary. Communicate between the customers and port personnel and maintain a close working relationship with the cargo handling supervisors. Reconcile physical counts with computer inventory records, as necessary.
  • Conduct investigations for claim and inventory discrepancies; troubleshoot and resolve in an expedited fashion.
  • Track open orders. Plan orders and provide documentation and work instructions daily for operations teams.
  • Provide data to Port customers in a variety of ways such as e-mails or scanned dock receipts, ship reports, physical inventory counts, discharge reports, overage/ shortage/ damage reports, discrepancies, and/or inventory information for their accountants.
  • Provide information to Business Development and Billing Departments on customer issues as necessary.
  • Work overtime as volume dictates to provide outstanding customer service.
  • All other duties as assigned by management.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have hands on knowledge of computers including prior experience in Excel and Word along with the ability to learn in-house applications. Navis N4 experience is preferred.
  • Position requires excellent communication skills, customer service skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet TWIC security requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Much of the time will be spent in good working conditions in climate-controlled environment, normal office/clerical duties. At times, the individual will be exposed to inclement weather, loud noise from machinery, proximity to machinery in operation, and fumes/odors from products that are handled at the Port. May also include driving on the Port and walking on concrete surfaces as well as bending/stooping when assisting with inventories. Normal lifting of up to 25 pounds as found in an office environment.
