POSITION: CAREER COACH/EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time / Non -Exempt

RESPONSIBLE TO: Comprehensive Career Services Director

RESPONSIBLE FOR: N/A

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Assist customers in the Michigan Works! Employment Services resource room, in person or by phone, that are requesting job search/application assistance, needing resources for UIA reporting, doing career and training research, etc.
  • Provide initial assessment, eligibility and suitability determination and intakes to any job seekers who request services through GST Michigan Works! WIOA programs in Shiawassee County, are referred by local employers through Business Services, or referred through DHHS for PATH services.
  • Provide career/job search counseling and case management services to all assigned participants, maximizing the independence and employability of each one; providing guidance to participants who need training, through an approval process to determine eligibility and suitability, and through training for successful completion and certification, resulting in employment.
  • Responsible for following all requirements regarding participant files, OSMIS reporting, reporting of PATH hours/activities and the provision of services over all programs, maintaining case notes throughout all activities and retention period, in order to ensure successful outcomes and meet data validation and performance measurements.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Facilitate the development of an Individual Service Strategy (ISS) and Individual Employment Plan (IEP), considering potential barriers to employment with appropriate action plan for each, projecting any supportive services and training needed to overcome determined barriers.
  • Assist participants with an initial assessment of services needed and job search assistance at the Employment Services (ES) Resource Center at a regular scheduled time and as needed.
  • Responsible to approve any supportive services requests for assigned participants and process with Office Coordinator for supervisor approval and payment request.
  • Work collaboratively with the Business Services team in monitoring available job leads, on-the-job or customized training opportunities, screening participants and making referrals when appropriate.
  • Assist participants in the development and improvement of a professional resume.
  • Maintain no less than bi-weekly contact with each participant during job search and/or training process and no less than monthly contact during entire follow-up after employment is obtained.
  • Work with other Career Coaches to plan and facilitate all employment readiness group sessions and workshops for participants. Solicit involvement of Business Services staff when appropriate, as well as other outside sources.
  • Will be cross-trained to understand all programs at the service center.
  • Assist Program Director in providing Orientations for participants.
  • May assist with job search efforts on behalf of the participant.
  • Determine supportive services as needed. Monitor to ensure that as problems arise, needs are adequately met within established time limits. Update information on ISS.
  • Refer those in need of services beyond WIOA/PATH parameters to other partners.
  • Follow the rules and regulations contained in the supportive service work statements for GST Michigan Works!
  • Complete case management responsibilities and reports as assigned by supervisor.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • May participate in Chamber of Commerce and/or other community organizations, serving on various committees if needed.
  • May give presentations to various community, referral and civic organizations.
  • May present information to employers and others concerning ADA standards and incentives for employing individuals with disabilities or other barriers.
  • May need to be CPR and/or First Aid certified.
  • May on rare occasions transport participants to interviews, etc. if no other arrangements can be secured.
  • Copying and filing of materials as needed.
  • Attend training, workshops, meetings and seminars as directed.
  • Provide assistance to other program staff and/or the Program Director as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS degree in human service, communications or business fields preferred, or experience in workforce development, human resource, or sales preferred.
  • Demonstrated marketing skills and demonstrated ability to handle the public effectively.
  • GCDF or BSP certified or willing to obtain GCDF Certification after hire.
  • Basic computer, keyboard and internet proficiency.
  • Proper phone usage and good communication skills, both written and oral, are also necessary.
  • Must be able to meet the travel demand of the job.
