Job Description
A Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist, often referred to as a CVOR CST, is a healthcare professional who plays a crucial role in assisting surgeons and the surgical team during cardiovascular surgeries. They are responsible for ensuring that the Operating Room is prepared, sterile, and equipped with all necessary instruments and supplies for cardiovascular procedures.
Preparation of Operating Room:
- Ensure the Operating Room is set up and sterile before each surgery.
- Arrange surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies required for the procedure.
- Verify the functionality of equipment and instruments.
- Assist in positioning the patient on the operating table.
- Hand instruments and supplies to surgeons and nurses during surgery.
- Maintain a sterile field and adhere to aseptic techniques.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and assist as required.
- Monitor the patient's vital signs and provide updates to the surgical team.
- Document relevant information during the surgery.
- Maintain accurate records of surgical instruments used.
- Clean, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments and equipment.
- Perform quality checks on instruments and ensure they are in working order.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols and infection control guidelines.
- Dispose of medical waste and contaminated materials properly.
- Report any safety hazards or incidents to the appropriate personnel.
- Communicate effectively with the surgical team, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Provide clear and concise information during surgery.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a surgical technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification is typically required.
- Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist (CVOR CST) certification is often preferred or required for this specialized role.
- Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist, especially in cardiovascular surgeries, is often preferred.
- Proficiency in sterile techniques and aseptic practices.
- Knowledge of cardiovascular surgical procedures and instruments.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
