Job SummaryThe Communications Specialist I will communicate to persons requesting and providing Campus Safety service, monitor all fire and intrusion alarms, answer phones, liaison with other Campus Safety agencies, produce administrative work, and dispatch Campus Safety specialists during emergencies and other times to provide appropriate services to our community. This position is defined as a non-exempt position under FLSA regulations.Specific Responsibilities· Work the shifts of 8 am to 4 pm, 4 pm to 12 am, and 12 am to 8 am as needed.· Display a courteous and helpful demeanor to all potential customers.· Build relationships across campus and engage with students.· Exercise appropriate situational approach and response when working with victims of serious crimes, emergency dispatchers from other Campus Safety agencies, Selinsgrove Police and Pennsylvania State Police Officers.· Monitor all fire and intrusion alarms.· Answer phones and direct callers to appropriate resources.· Liaison with dispatch and communications personnel from other Campus Safety agencies.· Use radio communications equipment, dispatch Campus Safety personnel during emergencies and other situations, monitor CCTV.· Issue Identification cards.· Produce general administrative work as directed by supervisors.· Maintain confidentiality in appropriate circumstances.· Assist with communications during emergency events (natural and/or man-made) with efficient communication/warning to campus community.· Availability to respond to campus, if necessary, when contacted by email or telephone within 8 hours.
Required Qualifications:EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent required.
ExperienceA minimum of one year of customer service experience is preferred.Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesThe person in this position must have knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services which includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. They must also have knowledge of and ability to learn and use software and equipment including Honeywell/Siemens Fire Alarm and Building Security System Facility Commander and DNA Fusion Access Control and Badging System, Motorola, Base and Portable Radio Equipment, Regroup – Short Message System, Public Address/Warning Siren and Microsoft Office. They must also have the ability to remain calm under tremendous stress and pressure, and multi-task in daily and/or emergency operations.
Additional Requirements· This position requires a valid driver’s license, and the ability to drive and qualify under the university’s insurance carrier when driving a university and/or leased vehicle.· The ability to complete certifications, such as First Aid/CPR, AED and other certifications as determined by department management is required.· This role is identified as one that includes significant interaction with students and/or campus activities, and/or has oversight for disciplinary procedures. Therefore, you are considered a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and required to report any Clery Act crime disclosed to you and remain compliant with annual CSA training requirements.
Physical DemandThis position requires the ability to sit for long hours; hear phones ring and broadcasts over radio; speak clearly on phone and over the radio; use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. This position requires vision abilities that include close vision and ability to adjust focus; and the ability to function in a work environment with moderate noise level from several sources creating constant activity.
