The Assistant Campus Life Supervisor is a year-round, full-time position that reports to the Campus Life management team. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the daily operations of the Campus Life Department. You will assist in supervising and guiding a team responsible for providing essential services to our students, ensuring their well-being, and fostering a positive and inclusive community. Having access to confidential information regarding Shrub Oak and its students, discretion and independent judgement is required. The Assistant Supervisor also assists with other programs, events, and services administered through the Campus Life Department and can be involved in a wide range of Campus Life responsibilities. 

Essential Functions – Primary duties of the position  

  • Collaborate with Campus Life management team in managing daily residence hall and boarding student operations, including staff scheduling. 

  • Supervise and mentor staff, including DSPs (Direct Support Professional) and 1:1s, contributing to their professional development. 

  • Participate in the hiring process and address performance management concerns. 

  • Act as a liaison between the Campus Life Department and key offices, facilitating communication and coordination. 

  • Mentor and orient new staff members, promoting their growth within the organization. 

  • Manage challenging student behaviors with a focus on teaching alternative productive behaviors. 

  • Develop and maintain trusting relationships with students, understanding their unique needs and fostering a positive environment. 

  • Explain, enforce, and support policies and procedures, promoting self-advocacy and independence. 

  • Complete administrative tasks, including move-in/move-out procedures, orientation, and incident reports. 

  • Attending emergencies and situations requiring immediate attention promptly, following established procedures. 

  • Facilitate programming and community development based on student needs. 

  • Advise, support, and mentor students on various life issues, collaborating with faculty and clinicians. 

  • Develop, present, track, and evaluate educational and Campus Life programs. 

  • Collaborate with Campus Life staff to ensure students have a regular schedule of events and activities. 

  • Attend staff meetings, seminars, and remain on call as needed to support program operations. 

    

Qualifications: 

  • Relevant education and experience in student housing. A minimum of 48 college credits, an Associate's degree (AA), or successful completion of the Para Assessment Test.  

  • Alternatively, a relevant combination of post-secondary education and a minimum of 2 years of experience working with special needs populations, such as in roles like 1:1 support, Direct Support Professional (DSP), Social Worker, Recreational Therapist, Registered Behavioral Technician, Behavioral Specialist, paraprofessional, assistant teacher, or related positions. 

  • Previous special education and behavioral intervention experience (experience working in a boarding school program is a plus). 

  • Experience with adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum or students with developmental disabilities. 

  • Ability to mentor and develop staff. 

  • Knowledge of and experience with crisis prevention and intervention strategies and practices, and behavior intervention plans  

  • Strong organizational and communication skills. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office. 

  • Confidentiality management and multitasking capability. 

  • Collaborative team player with flexibility for evening and weekend work. 

  • Valid driver’s license preferred.

What is the nature and scope of independent decisions made in this position?  

He/she must be able to make reasonable assessments and decisions, to handle the day-to-day aspects of the role; he/she will be required to make valued, informed assessments and recommendations, and consult to the program manager and director for guidance as appropriate.  

Work Environment  

The work will generally be performed in an after-school and weekend residential school environment.  

Physical Demands  

The position requires mobility, including walking, standing, navigating stairs, and occasional lifting/carrying of up to 25 pounds. Quick response and mobility around the campus may be required to ensure student safety in unexpected situations. 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a 12-month, full calendar year position, with a traditional 40-hour work week. After-hours and weekend work required to meet job demands. Weekday afternoon/evenings, and weekend shifts. Full-time and part-time positions may be available.
