Job Description
The Bowery Mission (TBM) exists to promote the flourishing of New Yorkers overcoming homelessness and marginalization by providing compassionate services and transformative community. The Make Progress residential program provides a caring and safe environment for clients to achieve goals for life and work, heal from past trauma, overcome barriers to independent living, and grow in their relationship to Christ and others.
As a key member of the Make Progress (MP) team, the Community Life Manager leads the Community Life department in establishing a safe and welcoming residential community. Guides MP Community Life in creating a trauma-informed residential community that fosters positive and growing relationships with God and others and equips clients to achieve independent living goals. Supports MP Community Life to achieve excellence in standards of radical hospitality and physical safety, including fire safety and crisis intervention. Utilizes a mentoring/coaching approach to ensure client support of Community Life Guidelines. Oversees client “give-back” assignments in support of campus operations. Fosters effective and supportive collaboration between Clinical and Vocational Services, the Choose Help program’s Community Life department, Operations, and Volunteer Services team members.
The Manager's responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to:
- Hospitality:Safety and Operations– Ensure daily effective practices that foster a safe, welcoming, healthy, and caring living environment
- Staff Supervision and Training – Provide direct support, supervision, and comprehensive training programs to MP Community Life team members to ensure their professional development and effective performance in their roles.
- Client Services – Lead team to welcome and orient new clients to residence and review Community Life Guidelines.
- Volunteer Support – Provide support and supervision for volunteer groups and individuals.
- Reportingand Recordkeeping – Ensure census and client data is accurately recorded after every shift, including Community Life notes, shift notes, client medication usage log, and incident reports.
Supervisory responsibilities: this role supervises the following staff either directly or indirectly:
- Community Life Supervisors
- Community Life Coordinators
- Community Life Associate
- Residential Interns
Reports to: Program Director, Make Progress
Shift:
- Monday - Friday (4 days 10 am - 6:30 pm & 1 day 7 am - 3:30 pm)
Requirements:
- Embraces the organization's Statement of Faith
- Bachelor's degree
- 3 years in ministry, non-profit, or residence management with roles of increasing responsibility with supervisory duties.
- Commitment to cultural diversity and sensitivity
- The ability to build effective relationships/partnerships
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Proven flexibility, multi-tasking, and problem-solving ability
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook
Preferred:
- Certifications in the following:
- Mental Health First Aid, Non-violent Crisis Intervention, Motivational Interviewing
- First Aid/CPR, F-80 Fire Safety Certification
- Bilingual (Spanish/English)
Salary commensurate with relevant education & experience: $58,000 - $65,000 per year
