2024 Summer Camp – Travel Camp Counselor – Camp Dean
Job Duration: Summer – May 28 – August 5, 2024
Locations: Camp Dean, Big Rock, IL - This position is required to live on-site at camp.
Salary: $500/week Application Deadline: Open until filled.
The Travel Camp Counselors are responsible for working with campers to identify and plan for their individual objectives for attending camp with the expectation of providing an exciting, fun, and memorable experience for all campers. They will transport and participate in our camp programs which involve off-site visits, such as our horse camps at Camp Dean and adventure camps at Camp McCormick.
Responsibilities:
- Drive camp groups to off-site horse stables for horseback riding program.
- Supervise all assigned aspects of campers’ day including morning activities, cabin clean-up, mealtimes, rest hours, evening activities, getting ready for bed and after-hours duties as assigned.
- Teach camping skills and appreciation of the out-of-doors as well as themed program activities.
- Work in a team with other counselors, program staff, and assistance staff around camp.
- Guide activities and experiences in the unit through use of girl-leader planning and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
- Support and strengthen courage, confidence, and character in all campers and staff.
- Assist in unit housekeeping, sanitation, care of supplies and equipment.
- Assist with the responsibility for the health and safety of the campers, including providing first aid and ensuring campers maintain good personal hygiene.
- Assist with records, reports, and inventories as requested by Unit Leader.
- Live in a unit near campers.
- Identifies and responds to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
- Assist in the opening and closing of camp as directed.
- Take precautions to ensure personal health.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings on time and in uniform.
- Be a role model for campers in words, deeds, and actions.
- Provide a thrilling and safe atmosphere for campers to explore, learn, and create while developing personally.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must have a valid US driver’s license.
- Must live on-site Sundays through Fridays, with 3 Saturdays working during summer season.
- Experience working with children.
- Girl Scout experience preferred.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Comfortable around animals.
- Ability to maneuver through camp without assistance and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Integrity, good character, good judgment.
