Job Summary:
Serve as a positive mentor to 10-12 youth, ages 5-13, in an overnight camp setting. Cabin Counselors live in cabin/yurt alongside their campers and facilitate camp life for their campers. In addition, cabin counselors' mentor a counselor-in-training (CIT), who serves as co-counselor. Cabin Counselors develop camper character and values; fosters cabin community, encourages group leadership, and develop stewardship. Instruct 2-3 skillbased activities per day. Provide a quality experience to campers & families focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Represents the YMCA and self in a professional manner of safety and fun.
Duties:
- Be a positive mentor/role model to youth.
- Promote a positive and inclusive environment that fosters fun, safety, intentional and meaningful experiences for campers.
- Be responsive to campers’ social/emotional wellbeing and create a emotionally safe environment.
- Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities inside and outside of the cabin. Cabin counselors lead by example and participate alongside campers to foster a sense of safety and trust.
- Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times
- Recognize individual and group situations and effectively resolve conflicts based on camp values and procedures.
- Foster a culture of campers first, where all campers are made to feel they are the priority.
- Maintain open communication and proactively work to build strong relationships with Co-leaders and Leadership staff.
- Facilitate cabin overnights – ensure campers’ supervision and comfort, sanitation, programming throughout the night.
- Report any safety concerns immediately to supervisor.
- Maintain camper and staff confidentiality at all times. This is including, but is not limited to, camper health history, personal history, and camper hygiene issues.
- Complete all required online and in-person training.
- Follow all YMCA of Grays Harbor staff policies and guidelines.
- Follow all YMCA of Grays Harbor policies and procedures related to the prevention and/disclosure of child abuse.
- Other duties, as assigned.

- Must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move a higher amount.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus, with or without accommodation.
- Must participate in programming outdoors, regardless of weather.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Knowledge and skills in program activities and related equipment set-up, and the ability to instruct participants in age-appropriate techniques.
- Positive attitude and previous experience with children and diverse populations
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications, online trainings and Child Abuse prevention training prior to start of camp season (trainings will be assigned once hired)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Six months or more of youth development experience.
- One year Camp Counselor experience.
- Experience in child Leadership and/or related activities experience.
- Knowledge and skills in camper and peer leadership, group and interpersonal dynamics, child behavior and typical camp activities.
- American Red Cross or Y-USA Lifeguard Training certification.
- American Red Cross or Y-USA Swim Lesson Instructor certification.
Pay Structure:
As a seasonal recreation facility, Camp Bishop is exempt from minimum wage requirements. Staff are paid a daily stipend, rounded to the half day. In accordance with state and federal law for seasonal recreation employment, staff are given 24 hours of rest time for every 7 days worked, as well as room and board while camp is in session. Additionally, staff are given a 30 min break each day.
