Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Information Technology Infrastructure Management Division (IMD), Telecomm Support Operations Office, is looking for detail-oriented, energetic, personable, and self-motivated career-minded Student Assistants for openings in the Oakland office.
Under close supervision by the Information Technology (IT) Supervisor II, in a learning capacity, the Student Assistants (SA) will ensure IMD services are met by assisting in the implementation and support of Information Technology policies, standards and services. The SA will assist Information Technology (IT) employees to provide high quality customer service. The Student Assistant will also provide a variety of assistance with Division projects and software programs including Microsoft Office365, OneDrive, Adobe Acrobat, TEAMS, and ServiceNOW.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI Student Assistant positing should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.
Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.
Majors/Fields of Study
Computer Science or closely related field of study.
Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (MS Excel and MS PowerPoint, in particular).
  • Ability to:
    • Take initiative and work independently or in a team environment.
    • Handle assignments in a professional and timely manner.
    • Follow oral and written directions and meet deadline commitments.
    • Multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
    • Work on increasingly difficult assignments.
    • Work under pressure with short timeframes for deadlines.
    • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted during the course of employment.
  • Willingness to work at different locations throughout Sacramento.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Ability to enthusiastically accept new assignments, learn new skills and adapt to a changing work environment.
  • Ability to use Adobe eSign and ServiceNOW.
  • Understanding of basic Information Technology hardware, such as desktop, laptop and cellphone
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce thorough and accurate results.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with staging of Desktops/Laptops, includes imaging, installing additional software with Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM or SCCM), quality assurance check, and deploying hardware as requested.
  • The student will assist in the Survey Process of the department's computer equipment, such as desktops, laptops, printers, monitors, docking stations, and IT accessories including wiping, staging, and validating.
  • Under the guidance of the lead analyst, the student will support the training room IT staff for all appointments and walk-ins for computer-based issues and requests; including troubleshooting, researching, and resolving and updating the request through ServiceNOW.
  • Assist in Virtual Service Desk (VSD) support as needed, including monitoring VSD incoming calls and provide 1st level support as well as triage to different districts/units as needed.

Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office or in a field environment.
