Position Purpose
Under the direction of the Transportation leaders, coordinates lot operations for all buses. Ensures on- time departure of buses while coaching and providing leadership and assistance to assigned team members. Responsible for implementation and compliance with District and departmental policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Transportation Operations
- Verifies Bus Driver and attendant route times.
- Supervises bus departures and loading areas at assigned school.
- Provides input to transportation director and/or route planner to facilitate planning and maintenance of bus routes.
- Ensures accurate and detailed pre-trip inspections conducted by assigned drivers prior to lot departure.
- Monitors the completion and delivery of paperwork for assigned bus routes to ensure timely reporting.
- Ensures the timely and accurate completion of reports and other administrative duties (i.e. First Wednesday Reports, State Mileage, and Route Descriptions, Seating charts).
- Generates computer print-outs and ensures the maintenance and updating of all route descriptions for assigned buses.
- Maintains and updates bus equipment status, including but not limited to cleanliness, damage, and vandalism; reports damages to the Manager and Supervisors.
- Pulls video hard drive from buses, reviews and make copies of video footage.
- Inspects all assigned buses daily (checking for cleanliness, damage, and students who may be left on the bus).
- Drives buses and/or relief buses as needed and follows assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
- Drives bus to and from extracurricular activities as needed.
- Anticipates problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and makes necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.
- Performs pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notifies supervisor of needed repairs. Keeps assigned bus clean and maintains appropriate fuel levels.
- Reports all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and completes corresponding reports.
- Operates and monitors two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and other drivers.
- Completes and maintains accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and the number of passengers transported.
Student Management
- Instructs students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations.
- Supervises students while they board and leave bus and cross the street.
- Maintains discipline and uses effective behavior management control over groups of students.
- Reports student discipline problems to appropriate administrator. Communicates with teachers and parents regarding student's behavior when warranted.
- Performs emergency evacuation of students on bus when situation warrants.
Coaching & Training
- Assists drivers and attendants resolve issues that arise, understanding all District and department policies and provides work performance training and coaching.
- Provides coaching, leadership, and assistance in resolving student management problems.
- Trains new Bus Drivers and attendants, including but not limited to, prior to receiving their safety certification.
- Advises relief drivers on the physical conditions of assigned routes.
- Monitors performance of assigned Bus Drivers to ensure that routes, schedules, and safety procedures are consistently followed, and records are maintained.
- Provides written recommendations to the Supervisors for annual performance evaluations on team drivers and attendants.
Safety
- Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Ensures proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflectors.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Reports any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.
- Installs snow chains during inclement weather.
- Follows procedures to ensure that no child is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time, and that all children have departed bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, evening and during field trips or other special trips).
- In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuates children according to written and practiced procedures, ensures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written report as required.
- Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Reports any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.

Travel Requirements
- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
- Transports students from home to school, and school to home as required.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Tools/Equipment Used: Operate school bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher. Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals.
- Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling
- Motion:
- Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching;
- Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse.
- Lifting:
- Limited light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds) on a daily basis;
- Must exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally (such as lifting students in wheelchairs), and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; regularly work irregular hours, and occasionally work prolonged hours
- Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
- Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required.
- Certification/License:
- Clear and valid Texas CDL Class B driver's license with (P) passenger and (S) school bus endorsement;
- Insurable by the District's insurance carrier required;
- Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate;
- Complete a 20-hour certification course for a Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate.
- Experience: 1-year experience as Bus Driver in a school district or experience transporting children preferred; must have an acceptable driving record.
- Language: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred in some settings.
- Additional Requirements:
- Must be able to pass annual physical;
- Must be able to pass a recurring 8-hour Bus Driver Safety Training course provided by the District to maintain the CDL license.
INSURABILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL DRIVERS
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
- Driving and accident record:
- NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
- moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
- failure to provide proof of valid driver's license or proof of insurance;
- equipment violations.
- NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
- NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
- NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
- NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver's license.
- NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
- NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
- NO operating a vehicle without owner's permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
- NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
- NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
- NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.
- Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD's Fleet Insurance Carrier.
